HOOVER SUBMITS MEASURES ON COAL Harding Considering Means to Distribute Fuel and Stop Profiteering. WASHINGTON, Aug. 25—Secretary of Commerce Hoover today sub- | mitted to President Harding the two j proposed measures drafted by the \ presidential fuel committee for the j litigation of profiteering and for bet- j ter distribution of coal in interstate commerce. The first of the proposed bills proposes an extension of the interstate commerce in such fashion as to give “positive priority to the movement of non-profiteering coal.” The second provides that the Fed- i eral Government “enter the business : of purchase and distribution of coal and by such competition put the bal- t r.nee wheel in the price situation.” Happy Hearts Under Painful Backs of Miners By United .Vrtr* SPRINGFIELD. 111., Aug. 25. There were ninety thousand lame | backs in Illinois Thursday night. They belonged to coal miners coming out of the p:ts after the first day’s work since April 1. Production was resumed in every big mining center throughout the State and so quickly did cutters {ret on the job that coal was raised from deep shafts late in the day. As the first toad of “black diamonds" shot into view at all the mines in this territory, cheers from both miners and i operators split the air. By Friday daily productions will reach the 250.00 c tons daily mark, according to opera- ! tors, and by next week Illinois mines j will be turning out 340,000 tons every j twenty-four hours.
