HUNG SERVICE DEMANDS CROW Customers Satisfied Only With Best, Transfer Man Says. Light and heavy hauling of all descriptions with especial attention to the handling of baggage is the specialty of the Service Transfer and Storage Company, 240 Hudson St, according to S. C. Reynolds, president. “The demands for hauling of all kinds has increased tremendously in the past few years,” President Reynolds said. “It certainly is strange and hard to explain but. nevertheless it is a fact. Asa result of this demand our company went into business with the express intention of supplying the very best service in the line that could be given. We incorporated the name ‘service', in the name of our company, we put in the slogan which is. ‘Service Our Motto,’ and we have insisted that all our employes lire up to the very highest meaning of the word, ‘We haul anything, any time, any place, light or heavy, and by this service of twenty-four hours every day, and every day every year, we have built up a reputation which 1 feel sure has been the biggest cause of our success. ‘We give a great deal of our time to contract work, are well fitted and equipped to take care of this particular type of business. This branch of the business also has grown rapidly. Business firms have come to realize that in most instances it is cheaper in the long run to let their hauling on the contract basis than to carry the expense and overhead of maintaining their own means of transportation." UNCLESRMLOSES ON IMMIGRATION Passport Fees Amounting to Millions Are Kept From Treasury Coffers. By United Pres* WASHINGTON, Aug. 21.—Rigidly restrictive immigration legislation enacted by Congress in June, 1321, to dam the flood of foreigners surging to American shores cost the State I>s partment over *5.0*10.000 in passport visa fees during the past fiscal year and its position as the only self supporting department of the Govern ment. as well. In the fiscal year 1920-1921, the Department collected over $10,000,000 largely from $lO visa fees paid by immigrants. This sum exceeded by $I .- 270,198.76 the amount paid out by the Treasury to operate the Departments and its activities. The surplus was turned over to the Treasury. During the fiscal year just ended, however, barely $5,000,000 was taken in by the Department. The slump is attributed to the immigration law which cut immigration into America in half and curtailed the lucrative business conducted hy American consuls in foreign ports in visas. Asa result, the Department estimates an excess of expenditures over receipts of $3,306,025.07 for the, year, completely wiping out the profit made last year.

CIVIC PRIDE A NECESSITY No Community Can Progress Without it, Chiropractor Says. All citizens of a community should j take a deep interest in the affairs of i their community, regardless of what i line of Industry or what profession j they are engaged In, is the opinion of M. L. Galerman, doctor of chiropractic, 426 State Life building. "Real community Interest is a ne- i eesslty to the life of a progressive j locality," he said, “and no community j in which a widespread interest in 10-; cal affairs is not taken can hope to j of very far In this modern day and j age. “Times have changed greatly in ! the past few years. The old idea of j every man for himself as the sole method of obtaining advancement in the world has now given away before a growing realization that the only true path is through service to others. It has been proved by actual experlence that any community will well repay its citizens who take sufficient interest In it to devote to it some of their time and thought. “It has been my observation and experience that practice of profession enables the practitioner to take a real interest in civic affairs. To me community spirit means brotherly interest. a desire to put the Golden Rule into practice in a practical way In business affairs, for experience ha* proved beyond a question that what works for the benefit of a community will work for the benefit of the Individual composing it. “Chiropractors as a whole realise that they can be of great value In boosting this community spirit by giving a service which tends to maintain the health of the community. I only wish I could moke more persons ralize Just how much chiropr&cty has done and still Is doing for the people | as a whole, and for this reason I am j only too glad to have any one drop j in on me at any time for a friendly j discussion. “At all times my office has been j open to those in need of treatment and who have not sufficient means to pay for them. None In financial straits ever has been turned away by : me, and I think I am safe in saying the same thing applies to a vast ma j jorlty of all chiropractors “The rapid growth In popularity of chiropractic adjustments is the twist proof of the value of the treatments, for no profession can succeed for any length of time unless It has a foundation of real service." The Talkems The Talkem family is sure In every climate to endure. There’s Talkymuch. the Eskimo: Though icebergs come and icebergs go His talk is ever on the flow! And there is Talk Hottentot: No matter how the sun is hot He jabbers pagan polyglot! Toung Ah Wee Talk, the Chinese boy. Finds conversation such a Joy His neighbors stop their enrs with soy! O'Grady Talk is no abstainer: He calls himself a bold Sinn Feitier, Would he less fluent were—anil saner! The noted Ancient Mariner A Talkem was, beyond compare; A specimen extraordinaire. DECORD LUMBER YEAR IN SOI Building Activity Greatest in History, Dealer Declares. “All indications point to a recordbreaking year in the building industry in Indianapolis, according to Forrest A. Hill, president )f the Speedway Lumber Compuany of this city. Speaking of the situation, he said: "All previous sales records for this company have been passed. Last year was our greatest year, but we have almost reached last year's figure al ready. From the first of the year we have noticed no lull, even the cus ternary July slack, until a few days of last week, but the halt was only a very alight breathing spell, for wi are as busy us ever again. “The rail strike has not affected us a great deal as yet. We have lieen able to get fairly prompt shipments in all kinds of building material to date, and we have adequate stocks to take care of the trade for some time. Two large sawmills in the South have suspended operations entirely and have called in their entire sales organization, but with these two exeep tions, so far as I am able to ascertain, our raw material sources are still accessible. “It is certain that lumber prices will not decline arid entirely probable that they will increase during the ‘ next few years. The present uncer tainty in the Industrial fields is slowing up operations, due to fear that some have, thnt they will not he able to expand without a great Wate of time. Especially is this true among the railroads, and the railroads alone :n this country during the next ten years will use enough material to assure a great volume of business to the building Industries, and lumber will be one of the materials most used. Statisticians have recently compiled figures on the building outlook In the larger cities of the T'nited States and their figures and graphs show possibilities of a building boom for the next ten years Graphs is sued by a large bank in Philadelphia were recently printed in the newspapers over the country and these showed that Indianapolis is two and two-thirds years behind In the building game. At this rate and with r normal increase in the city’s population. building men could do a business above normal during the next ten years equal to 25 per cent “From recent reports it appears that in the larger cities building construction Is increasing, while in the smaller communities conditions are stagnant stll. The only reason for this sltua tlon Is that in rural districts there is an air of uncertainty as to what thb price will h In the future. In the cities this uncertainty does not exist. “I do not heliex’e it is known generally that In the past year many lumber manufacturers have sokl their product below a figure which would yield a reasonable return on the investment. Demoralization resulting from the war in tho lumber mill crews even yet has not been rectified entirely. "There is no vocation more honorable than the lumber industry From time immemorial he has been the home builder and it Is becoming more and more common for him to furnish plans and specifications for lumberbuilt houses “In the past he frequently has been misunderstood and has been the object of great misrepresentation. He has been accused of profiteering. If tha public only knew it, lumber often is so’d at an actual loss at the mill The public is apt to accept the normal price as the proper price and does not take into consideration unusual conditions in the business world making necessary a deviation from this.”

ICE CREAM DEMAND GROWS National Dish Increases in Popularity Daily. One of the most interesting developments of American life in the past few decades has been the increasing demand for ice cream, is the opinion expressed by J. B. Browder, president of the Browder Ice Cream- Company, 918 N. Senate Ave. “Ice cream has come to be the typical American dish. In fact, it almost may be said to be our national dish. No other part of the world takes to the delicacy w,th the keenness of our people. In Europe the dish as we know it as non-existent. “Yet it is interesting to note that foreigners who never heard of the dish or who would pay It very little attention, if offered a plate of ice cream in the native lands, suddenly go crazy about it when they meet it over here. About ail they have in Europe in the way of ice cream are water ,ces. which are rather poor sub--titutes for the genuine article in the yes of the American. “During the war it was interesting to note that our soldiers in France clamored for ice cream. Just ask any former service man and hear what he has to say on the subject. Welfare workers m the army have told me that the demand for loe cream among the soldiers was tremsndous and the first thing our boys would do on returning to this country' would be to make a break for the nearest soda stand. "During the more than fifteen years our concern has been in business we have noted a tremendous Increase in the demand for our product. This has been due largely to the fact that ice cream is an every-day dish, used the year round now. Only a few years ago it was brought out only during the hottest summer days or for spe cial social occasions. This growing demand is due to a realization of the true food value of ice cream, and it is now recognized that it has for more value than just as a pleasant delicacy. "Physicians now prescribe it for patients and it has been found to be of great value to Invalids and convalescents. Naturally, this demand has resulted in a demand on the part of the public for improved service. We maintain a special delivery department and we are called upon constantly to send large or small quantities out on emergency calls. This has resulted in the perfection of our service to a point where we can make deliveries of any quantity on the veryshortest notice, “In addition to our ice cream business. we do a large businesr in milk and cream and this department is growin gsteadlly.” A Grand Finale Aunt Janet —Gladys, you have several runs and two holes in your stockings Gladys—Yes, I know, they are on their last legs.—Life.
