SEVERE TESTS FORJITTEMS Auto Manufacturers Make Selections Only After Thorough Tests. A battery company which has provided 4,600 service stations for Its patrons certainly must be able to take care of any demands put upon It, according to C. B. Harris, manager of the USL Service Company, 604 N. Illinois St. “The real value of USL batteries has been demonstrated in service to thousands of owners throughout the country and the fact that It has been picked as standard equipment for such cars as Durant, Earl, Ford, Brewster. Chalmers, Dort, Monroe, HandleyKnlght, Overland, Ranger, Stephens, Wlllys-Knight, Republic Truck and twenty others, Is poof that automobile engineers think the product Is an exceptionally good one,” Mr. Harris said. “In fact. It might be said that a million dollar staff of engineers has picked the USL. There is at the disposal therefore of automobile owners in need of a battery such a stafT, comprising the engineers of all the automobile companies, experts equipped with elaborate testing apparatus to measure definitely the quality and performance of batteries. “When a motor car manufacturer selects the battery to be used as standard equipment on his cars he invites battery companies which he believes have the experience and necessary manufacturing and scientific equipment to submit sets of batteries for tests. “The engineers of the company then virtually dissect the batteries, challenge the engineering design and the grade of materials and workmanship. The batteries must show their discharge ability at low and high temperatures and must undergo severe trials for stamina and dependability. Then the survivors of these rigid laboratory tests must stand a try-out on the road. Only those batteries measuring up to the quality basis are passed with the approval pt the engineers to the purchasing department for consideration. “It is reasonable for the car owner to be guided in the selection of a battery by the Judgment of these engineers.” CHURCH OWNS COW Plan is to R rt nt Her Out by Week, to I*oor Families. NEW YORK —The suggestion has gone out to members of the Presbyterian Church that every congregation own a cow and do missionary work with it, thereby showing “the milk of human kindness." The idea is for every church to own a cow and rent her by the week for a nominal sum to families among the membership where there are small children and not sufficient money to supply them with enough milk. And it is understood the cow is to be a Pres byterian. church cow is credited with being the animal owned by “The Church-by-the-Side-of-the Road,’' Greensboro. North Carolina, and “Mrs. Cow” bids fair to keep Greensboro on the map.

PEOPLE WISER THAN EVER No Longer Easy to Fool Customers With Inferior Products. People as a whole are far wiser in ths twentieth century than ever before in the history of the world, according to Carl L. Walters, proprietor of the Malt-Ade Supply Company, 12 Pembroke Arcade. “Sixty years ago Abraham Lincoln said you could not fool all the people all of the time, and so fast has been the development of Intelligence that today you cannot fool many of the people any of the time.” he said. “The world Is getting considerably wiser every minute and the man who still believes the old adage about a fool being born every minute is very likely to be one himself. This means that persons and products must make a name for themselves. No product is ever better than the man who produces it, “Take for example malt extract, for which there Is such a large demand. We have been in the malt extract business for three years, and we frankly admit that we do not know it all yet. “However, in that time we havs learned one thing at least, and that is that to cheapen a malt extract destroys Its value. “I believe that 90 per cent of the malt extracts made today are filled with moisture and adulterated with cheap corn. They are not worth tak lng home in many instances because they are not giving desired results. We take great pride in the fact that our Malt-Ade extract is made only from the very choicest barley produced in America. In spite of the enormous demand and cheapening of prices we never have lowered our quality. “Asa result there probably Is more Malt-Ade extract sold today than ever before This means but one thing—that we have produced a malt extract which has proved satisfactory in every respect to the great mass of people who are using it." FOUGHT IN SEVEN WARS Robert MacGregor Hpenda Most of His Time Hunting Battles. SEATTLE. Wash.—Robert Bruce MacGregor of Seattle, Wash., soldier of fortune who has spent the greater part of his forty-eight years drifting around the world looking for chances to fight, recently obtained Jobs for 236 former soldiers. In MacGregor's career he found wars seven different times and Jumped into them all. His last war was the one where the allies won from the Germans. He served with the original Princes Pat Regiment in 1914. Before the World War MacGregor fought in the Philippines as his bit In the SpantshAmertcan War. The Boxers started mixing it up in China and he was off to that fracas. The Natal Rebellion cropped up in South Africa. MacGregor made the Jump from China and landed in the middle of that war. The Matabele Uprising and the Jamieson Raid followed. LIGHTNING HITS ENGINEER Bolt Knocks Man Unconsciona In Locomotive. PUBLIC DEMANDS IUTOEIiINCE Poll of Owners Show Qualities Demanded by Motorists. A recent poll of 20,000 automobile owners conducted by the Automobile i Chamber of Commerce, Inc., of New York, showed some Interesting results as to the quality in an automobile which appealed to the average owner most, according to A. W’. Buck, president of the Buck Company, distributors in this territory of Studebaker automobiles, endurance and this was followed closely by economy of operation. Next came comfort and then price,” Mr. Buck said. This poll confirmed Studebaker’s experience of seventy years, during which time the company produced vehicles of all kinds. “As far as endurance is concerned Studebaker cars are giving daily service satisfactory to 400,000 owners in all civilized countries. Proof of their dependability rests upon the fact that our aalee of repair parts for the last seven months averaged by $7 per car. Up to Aug. I, 1922. we produced 550.000 cars and are now producing and selling at the rate of 125,000 cars a year. This practically is double the volume turned out In 1921 and yet our total sale of repair parts this year are less than they were for the corresponding period of 1919. "Greatest economy results from minimum repairs and high resale values of second-hand cars In proportion to list prices. Next in importance are the items of gtaollne and oil consumption from the standpoint of economy. In these respects the record of the Studebaker stands out strikingly well. “Correct design of weight distribution, spring suspension, etc., largely is responsible for the item of comfort Comfort and high cost do not go together necessarily. It ds a marked characteristic of Studebaker autoomobiles. The weight of our cars is borne almost equally on four wheels, the ideal distribution. “As to price, the theory that high prices means high quality, is fallacious. Our pric . are based not upon intrinsic value, but on production costs, and* Studebaker haa this factor worked out to the highest degree of efficiency. “In all other respect we have taken greater care to make the the very best bit of work possible and the thousands of satisfied Studebaker owners la the best proof that our es forts to produce a satisfactory car have been successful.”

BEAUTY POSSIBLE FOR ALL No Woman Is Ugly If She Chooses to Be Attractive. Almost any women can be beautiful and attractive if she takes sufficient interest in herself to make the effort, is the opinion expressed by Mrs. A. Otto Able of the Flower —in the Bottle Perfume Shop, 402 Central Life building. “A girl has to .be xtraordtoiarily cross-eyed, pigeon-toed or deformed to be beyond hope of rejuvenation,” Mrs. Able said. “Tfie girl who goes around wailing and lamenting that she is not attractive, never has been and never can be is certainly mistaken and is nothing more than a calamity howler. “I remember one case very well where I took a frowsy little bride of foreign extraction, and by simply showing her how to arrange her dress and put a little individuality into her personal appeatance made her look as though she had stepped off the cover page of a magazine of fashion. “Part of the secret in making a person like that good looking is to buy very simple things with perfectly straight lines. It does no good to put clo'hes on a obdy until the girl herself looks good. Give her hands, face and hair some care. These things will help out far more than most persons realize. “Our place is always open to any woman wanting advice of any. kind along these lines. From long personal experience I know Just how much I have helped many of the women and girls who have come to me for advice. “You see I have made a speciality of this. Our Arm, John Block! ft Son, Inc., of Chicago, has been in the busi'nesa of making toilet specialities of the very highest grade for many years, and during my connection with the company I have had a wide variety of interesting experiences along these lines. "And the more I see the more I realize that the Frenchman who said that there are no homely women, only those who do not know how to be beautiful, oertatnly was right In every particular.
