How Hate Can Change Man Into Wolf Shown Chaney in ‘The Trap’ By WALTER D. HICKMAN. A man may become a “wolf.” That sounds like a wild statement, but the theory has been thoughtfully worked out in Lon Chaney’s latest screen vehicle, ‘‘The Trap.” Os course, the man doesn’t grow a tail, but his character becomes . wolf-like. He acquires an animal passion for revenge, and he plans a ( trap for the man who robbed him of the woman he had planned to marry. The remarkable thing about ‘‘The Trap” Is that Chaney is given the tremendous job of showing on the screen the terrific inroads hate can make on the character of a man. In the beginning of the story Gaspard is a man-child, a lover of nature—in other words, he is a man in age, but a boy in thought afnd action. Gaspard does, not rapidly become a “wolf” In character, for the director and actor have attempted to paint as consistently as possible a story of the develpoment of a man’s character. Gaspard become mentally lost when he catches a wild wolf, known in the north as the “Devil Wolf.” Gaspard arranges a trick door which opens into a room of the cabin into which Gaspard’s human victim will enter. But —his plan doesn’t work. A little child enters the death trap. Then the real man in Gaspard chases out the “wolf” spirit and Gaspard Is born again.
Chaney as a Character Actor. ‘‘The Trap” belongs to the melodramatic school but it in raised to the j station of interesting melodrama because of the work of Mr. Chaney. He 13 indeed a man of ‘‘a thousand faces.” He knows how to reflect emotion. His face can become as innocent as anew bom babe and the next ; second register the most criminal expression. Mr. Chaney knows his screen and understands the fundamental principals of character work. He will foresake every possible pleasing advantage to make his characterization appear realistic. Some may feel Mr. Chaney is too realistic, but he is an “honest” actor and believes that when a man becomes a “wolf,” a wolf he is. And Chaney can be the cruelest of men when he wants to In his plays. He does a big job in ‘-“The Trap” and he does it with rare skill. The intense dramatic atmosphere of this picture is revealed by the work of a little boy. At the Ohio all week. + + -IConceming “Borderland Do spirits come hack to warn the ones they love, who are about to make a big mistake? They do In “Borderland,” the sea-

son and as the great-grand aunt, when she was a young wife making the same mistake the modern wife was about to make. We haven’t space to tell the story, hut no matter what are your beliefs | regarding the spirit world, you will i find much to Interest you In this picj ture. | The contrast of the modem day and j several generations ago is worth men- | tioning, for at no time are the changes so abrupt that they detract from the story. It is also interesting to note our present day stories are much the same as the old ones. The costumed part of the picture is beautiful. The directing throughout Is excellent. Here is a good picture. The cast, which speaks for itself, includes Milton Sills. Fred Huntley, Bertram Grassby, Casson Ferguson, Ruby Lafayette, Frankie Lee and little Mary Jane Irving. Beulah Marie Dix is the author of “Borderland.” (Reviewed by J. K.) -!- -I- -IThree Cheers! \C e’ve Found It I feel like yelling for joy. What's the trouble? I have seen a bunch of crook plays on the stage and many more on the screen and I have longed for the day ‘ when a producer would be big enough to "paint” his crooks as human beings. That day of days has arrived, because I found the human element truthfully worked out In Marshal Neilan's “Fools First.” Neilan knows how to create “movie suspense” and he knows how to make his actors act like human beings. In other words, Neilan forces his actors to forget they are actors while appearing before the camera. Mr. Neilan, if you do nothing more in your career as director, there will be a bunch of people on this old earth who are thankful for just that. Right now let me tell you I am not going to reveal one single line about, the story, because the less you know about It the better tinje you will have.
CAMOUFLAGED suj&E *■ U Bill Russell has been so busy lately using his fists in movie fights and thrills that you probably doubted he would take time to raise a beard. Believe It or not, his press representative sent us this picture of Bill wearing a beard. His latest movie is “Money to Burn” and it is the featured offering at the Isis this week. This story has a Wall Street setting.

Oh, boy, you will be on the edge of your seat long before "Fools First” has flickered for the last time, if I am not all wrong. There are two big acting triumphs in this Neilan movie—those con-f tributed by Claude Gillingwater and by Raymond Griffith. Griffith is cast as a “wop” leader of a gang of thieves. And the gang presided over by him is a real gang. You get the , idea that this bunch would really rob i a bank. Even when Griffith is tragic, i you will howl with joy. Then Claude | Gillingwater (bless this old man and | save him for many more movies) will ! convulse you again. Richard Dtx, Claire Windsor and many others in the cast. No, not a word about the story. I See it—it is immense. At the Circle all week. Forgot to tell you, the bill Include* a news weekly, an organ recital, gp ! scenic, topics of the day, good orchestra music and a comedy. -I- *1- -I' Elaine Wears Pretty Gowns Elaine Hammerstein does some good i work and wears some beautiful gowns in “Under Oath” at the Colonial this I week. The story concerns a fight between I two Wall Street powers, one an aristocrat and the other a man who had worked his way up from a dock hand. The ex-dock hand wanted revenge because the aristocratic family had “hightoned” him. He gets his revenge, but in such a way that he becomes ashamed of himself and tries to make reparation. In doing so he wins the love of the girl whose father he had tried to ruin. The story is well told. The American Harmonists have arranged a musical program, playing with their own record of “Count the Days” and "Sweet Evening Time.” -I- -!- -IA Made To Order Hero Circumstances make a hero of a coward in “His Back Against the Wall.” the current attraction at Mister Smith's. The story concerns an East Side New Yorker with a “yellow streak” who is ashamed of his own cowardice and leaves for the West. He is thrown off a freight train in the desert and wanders to a deserted shack. Tw*> bandits come to the shack. In * quarrel they kill each other. sheriff finds the New Yorker with a smoking gun and thinking he has killed the bandits, acclaims him a hero. At times you feel like choking the New Yorker, but he is such a ridiculous coward you have to laugh. The picture is light but entertaining. -|- -|- j. The Serial Idea Wins The more the movie serial idea is studied, the more convinced I am the success of a serial depends on who is in the cast. Ruth Roland probably is the best known serial actress on the screen today. She knows the value of doing daring deeds in each episode. At times, it seems, she writes the serial as she acts. She has created a serial public who go week after week to the same theater to see what will happen next to the queen of the serial. This is true at the Regent where her latest serial, “The Timber Queen.” is being presented each week. The fifth episode is now on view. The bill includes Neal Hart in “Table Top Ranch,” and a comedy. -I- -|- -?- On the Stage Today The Charm School” is the current week's offering at the Murat. George Gaul heads the cast. “Harmony Four” is the name of the healine act at the Lyric this week. “Who Stole My Sweetie” is the musical comedy at the Rialto this week.
