Charner Tidwell mentally hung that motto on the wall of his prison cell when he entered it in 1899. Today he Is free, having served nearly twenty-three years of a life sentence for a murder he did not commit. No hate is In his heart. Like Monte Cristo he spent his prison years in educating himself, but unlike Monte Cristo he does not plan to spend the rest of his life seeking vengeance. "I am at peace with the world,” says Tidwell. "I want to forget tha past and start life anew.” Gains Education An unlettered farm hand a 17, when he was convicted of killing his employer, James Brown, an Adair County farmer, he is now at 40 an educated man with a trade. He learned tailoring In Atlanta Federal prison and plans to follow hat trade. Because the crime occurred In the old Indian Territory, his trial In Federal Court and the first years of h:s sentence were spent in the Columbus (Ohio) penitentiary. The last eighteen years he has been at Atlanta, where he spent every spare minute In the prison library, educating himself and keeping abreast of developments in the outside world. Tidwell's indefatigable efforts to establish his innocence were rewarded recently when two sons of the murdered man, who as small boys identified him as the murderer in 1899, declared he was not the man. Confession Absolves Him Just after his' release an Oklahoma woman made a deathbe 1 confession that it was her husband who killed Brown. Five persons connected with Tidwell’s case have met sudden deaths: Besides the woman who confessed, her husband dropped dead of heart disease. The attorney who prosecuted Tidwell met a similar end. The Judge who sentenced him was shot to death in a riot and Tidwell's mother died of a broken heart. CAREY SENTENCED / Found Guilty on Two Charges In Police Court.
