CARE OF SPRINGS VITAL ID AUTOS Few Motorists Realize Importance of These Parts. Proper care of automobile springs is of vastly more importance than most motorists realize, according to William J. Ashley, president of the Indianapolis Auto Springs Company, 820 W. Washington St. “Asa result of improper attention and carelessness automobile owners endure endless troubles and are put to great unnecessary expense in many instances simply because they fail to take intelligent care of the springs of their machines. “In most c;tses these troubles could easily be avoided with a little attention, but for some reason motorists overlook this vital part of their machines. the springs. “One of the greatest troubles is that the motorist fails to realize just what an important part the springs play in relation to the rest of the machine. A weak, lopsided, badly aligned spring seems to make very little difference to many otherwise careful car owners. They go right ahead and drive the car without thinking just what thiß means. “Asa matter of fact the damage resulting from bad springs is far reaching and often almost incalculable. Weakness in the springs affects all parts of the car from tho alignment of the motor to the general balance of the car. Many automobile- troubles are directly traceable to bad springs, only the motorist never takes the trouble to find It out. "Our concern was organized for the purpose of giving careful and scien title attention to spring troubles of all sorts and they are numerous and varied. We maintain a modern, thoroughly equipped service station and employ only workmen who are ex pert in the particular line of work The work is peculiar in character and makes it necessary to use men skilled In It. “Every day we are called upon to retemper springs and replace broken and unsatisfactory leaves. We are prepared to do all kinds of work on all makes of springs regardless of type or year of manufacture. "We carry in stock a large supply of new springs for replacement purpose* and also In a position to duplicate any spring that is brought to us. Frequently we are called upon to manufacture entire springs for some particular purpose. “Our experience however has taught us that It is not worth while to attempt to weld springs. Spring steel does not take to welding and we make it a rule to do no work which w’e feel will not prove satisfactory in the long run to our customers.

PLATE GLASS A NECESSITY Protective and Beautifying Features Appeal to Women. Plate glass, formerly regarded as a luxury to be used only for show purposes where beauty and dignity were the object regardless of cost, has now become so common as to cause comment only by its absence, according to Parker H. James, president of the Indianapolis Glass Company, manufacturers and jobbers, 1002 Kentucky Ave. “Plate glass is now universally used in homes and has become almost as much of a modern necessity as the furniture Itself,” Mr. James said. “Women have found that plate glass results in a tremendous saving in household labor and they have been ! quick to see its advantages for use as I tops for dressing tables, buffets, dressers and furniture that is being subi jected to constant usage. By its use | these thrifty and far-sighted housej wives not only beautify and dignify j their homes, but they add a wonderful protection to the furniture, j “It will afford protection from ! scratches and blotches on highly fin- ! ished wood caused tv spilled perfume ior other liquids. Many a handsome ■ table has been seriously marred by having a hot dish set on it, necessitating an expenditure for reflnishlng far in excess of the cost of a glass top which would have afforded absolute protection. "Glass may be cut in any design or shape to fit furniture exactly, the edge of the glass is then ground and polished so there is no danger of cutting in handling it. “Business men have found the plate glass top for the office desk particular lv valuable for as a measure of efficiency papers and other data can be kept under the glass out of the way, yet always in sight. An additional : feature is that desks so protected hold i their original newness Indefinitely. “The demand for plate glass has grown to such an extent that it now far exceeds the supply. Automobile and body manufacturers alone now use more plate gloss than was produced in the entire country a few years ago. and then too. business men realize the , value of a modern front in their store ■ rooms, a front so attractive and handsome as to add to the beauty of the goods displayed. "We are in a position to design and construct store fronts for any kind of business, and this is a far harder task than most persons realize. For the small window of a Jewelry store will not answer for a hardware dealer. It takes thought along these lines to get the proper design for the particular purpose in mind. “We also handle building glass of all kinds and do a large business in installing windshields and automobile body glass Another part of our business which is steadily increasing is supplying beveled plate glass for French doors and full length mirrors for closet and dressing-room doors. As a matter of fact these can bo installed in any kind of a door without removing the door. This Is accomplished by use of a small molding and placing the mirror over tho door i anels."

CORNER CALLED ‘HUB DF CITY' Intersection of Meridian and Washington Street Scene of Great Activity. “The hub of Indianapolis" is the title many persons have bestowed upon the intersection of Meridian and Washington Sts., according to j L. G. Rothschild, special representative of the Merchants Heat and Light Company, which is located at this corner. “Approximately 16,000 persons pass this corner every day,” he said. "More than 2,000 persons are employed in the four buildings at this intersection and numbering of houses on all streets begin at this point. It is from this corner that the life of the city may be said to radiate. "On the corners stand a department store, one of the largest office buildings in the State, another large office buliding and the general offices of the Merchants Heat and Light Company. In addition this corner is the main gateway to the Monument and the Circle. "Our company feels it has good reason to take pride in the fact that it I supplies heat, l.ght and power to a j large part of Indianapolis. It means a groat deal to us to th.nk that twenty-four hours out of every day we supply thousands of persons with heat anti give light to the thousands of workers In the city. “One of the mam features of the j corner is the Silent Orator, the rr.otoj graph which holds the record of the j longest continuous service of any machine of its kind in the United States. It was put in operation July, 1916, and since that time never has missed a day of operation. Even during the war when ordinary electric s gns were shut down the Silent Orator was per- > ' mitted to operate because it carried ! patriotic and civic appeals and mes sages to the people of the city. It is I estimated that it is read by not less than 3.600 persons every night. "The amount of heat, i.gnt and power required for this comer is equal ; to that necessary for the average i county seat town of the State. It was on this corner that the first re- ! (lector was installed to cast light on ta© traffic officer in the center of the j street. Our company did this two years ago purely as a matter of civic pride.”

MIRRORS BEAUTIFY HOMES Tastefully Used They Add Dignity and Attractiveness. Few persons have realized in the past what an important place In the home a mirror can play, is the opinion expressed by an officer of the Fine Arts Framing Company, 343 Massachusetts Ave. In speaking of this he said: "Most of us are just beginning to see that the mirror has a definite place in home decoction —-a distinct, practical value for every room in the house. They may be used to give light and color to a dull room; they may be used to give more space In a small room, or to lighten up a somber hallway. "Interior decorators use mirrors to soften colors, to heighten and subdue effect, and to give anew and delightful tone to the whole house. These changes, which mean so much, depend on the kind of mirror, upon its frame, its size and its skillful placing. "The effect of space, so often needed, particularly in these days of apartment life, may be gained by the ties of a mirror, almost as If a walY had been taken down. It frequently happens that some room In the house is rather dreary, and we can't tell what makes it so. A mirror in a polychrome (rams will give It life and color, will make it a happy room. "Sometimes a drawing-room has a monotous character. A few mirrors will do wonders to correct this, bringing interest, even distinction, to the most common-place interior. Tt has often been said that mirrors are the eyes of a room. This Is particularly and most delightfully true when tho mirror Is hung over the mantel. 'There It reflects and repeats all the life and beauty of a room in the most charming way. There it is the central radiating spot and actually makes Itself felt. "No other one feature of a beautiful home is so effective as its mirrors, but their correct placing requires much thought and care. It is just as easy to go wrong as to go right, unless you know what mirror to buy, its suitable frame and ex actlv how to place It to get the effect needed. "To any one interested In the subject of mirrors and their uses we will, upon request, send our booklet. The Mission of tho Mirror.' a postcard. phone or personal call is all that Is necessary to obtain it. ’
