PITCHER DOAK . HAS STRING OF IRDIJPII Hurled Two One-Hit Games and They Were Nearly Rollers. By BILLY ETASS The fates have been mighty unkind to Pitcher Bill Doak of the St. Louis Cardinals this year. The ambition of eveiT major league j hurler Is to break into the no-hit class j at least once. Twice this season Doak has turned in two performances in which the opposition made only one hit. Early in May. Doak turned in a one-hit affair against the New York j Giants. His other one-h;t game was in July, against the Phillies. On each occasion the only hit made was a fluky infield tap, which rolled " mm ;lf 1 BILL DOAK. so elowly that the batsman was able to get the decision at first base by a scant margin. I umpired the game early in the year when Robertson of Chicago pitched a no-run. no-hit, no-man-reach-first game against the Detroit club. That psychology also enters into unusual baseball feats, as well as luck, was proved in that game. In the early innings the Tigers hit a half dozen balls hard. Three or four sensational catches prevented some of the drives from going for extra bases. Inability to get the ball safe peeved the Tigers. Some of the players began to insist that Robertson was doc- i toring the ball. Every inning a pro-! test was lodged. During the first four innings Rob- ' ertson was hit fairly hard but was j saved by good support. Then, by fussing over the ball, the Tigers took - minds oft their work and the 9Rting slumped. Asa result, Robertson ' jogged through the last five innings in easy fashion. High-class pitching had been aided by luck and psychology. A. B. Cs. Lose Again The A. B. Cs. went down again before the Bacharachs at Kokomo on Thursday, 9 to 6. Ross was hit hard in the fifth and sixth innings. The As. threatened in the eighth. but "Winters stopped the rally. Th? Kansas City Monarchs will be the next attraction at Washington Park Sun-] day. Logan Wins I. U. Tennis By Timet Special BLOOMINGTON. Ind., July 28.
