MAJOR PARTIES LOOK TO LABOR WITH CONCERN . .. r Republicans Connect Memories of 1919 Mine Tangle and Present Disorder. , ANGLE FOR APPROVAL Miners, Unaffiliated, Question Policies of Present Administration. Bu ROBERT J. BENDER United New Staff Correspondent, WASHINGTON, July 20.—Events have transpired In the coal and rail strikes to pit organized labor, as a unit, against the Administration in the campaign now on to capture public opinion. And, because the forces involved are more numerous and the political potentialities commensurately greater, there is a concern manifested by Republicans here even greater than that which haunted the Democrats In 1919. It was that year that Former President Wilson issued his famous injunction order against the miners. Politicians recall that the injunction “came home to roost” in ensuing elections. SOME BULL! By United Press CHICAGO, July 20.—The steer la mightier than the flivver. A shorthorn escaped from a Wild West show and completely demolished a flivver which blocked Its path.
Clare there are 5,000,000 trade unionists in the United States today, who, with their families, would probably muster a maximum of 15,000,000 vote*. A majority of those votes thrown to either of the major parties, who, combined, polled 26,700,000 votes in the last presidential election, almost certainly would assure victory. Oppose Third Party The American Federation of Labor la opposed to the third party idea and prefers to cast Its votes to one party or the other. All of which constitutes the concern today among practical politicians in the Republican party, as the Democrats religiously keep out of it. As the Industrial contest goes on, this campaign for public opinion will become more bitter, politicians fear, and the cleavage between the Administration and organized labor will become wider as the solidarity of the workers grows. There never has been a time in the political history of the country when organized labor has voted as a unit for either of the major parties. It perhaps reached its nearest approach to unity in 1916, when Wilson was reelected. Gompers always has been a Democrat, and, during the Wilson Administration, was quite outspoken in his political views. On the other hand, John L. Lewis, head of the miners, is a RepublicanLeni* Perplexed Asa Republican, labor leaders say, he finds himself confronted with action by his own party deeigned to crush the solidarity of his great following. In the circumstances, labor officials here declare that trade unionists today are more closely knit in opposition to the Administration policies than ever before. It is for this reason that Republicans, privately, are voicing the same anxiety that Democrats voiced after Wilson applied a legal "strong arm” to the miners. President Harding's effort to effect resumption of coal production now awaits upon the operators. Continue Investigation Meantime, it is learned, the Department of Justice is carefully watching developments to determine whether there are any evidences of oollusion between either the railroad executives and mine operators, or between the rail workers and striking mines, that might be construed as a conspiracy to restrain Interstate Commerce. Secretary of War Weeks reiterated that Federal troops would be utilized only In event State machinery was found Inadequate to afford protection to the reopening mines and that such forces would be utilized solely for protective purposes. He also indicated that the Government would not protect mines if it were found that operators who succeeded in producing coal started in to profiteer. SURVEY MADE BY SHOPMEN SHOWS FEW MEN ON JOB Pennsylvania Railroad Action In Dealing With ‘Stool Pigeon Committee’ Hit. Partial survey of railroad strike conditions in Indianapolis was given out Thursday by the publicity committee of the Federated Shop Crafts from headquarters at Machinists’ Hall, showing that at the Pennsylvania shops on E. Washington St. 473 are out on strike and 64 men are now at work, after eliminating clerks, shop laborers and foremen, who are not affected by the strike order. What Survey Shows The survey report finds the number of machinists out to be 137; machinists working, 16; boilermakers out, 56; boilermakers working, 6; blacksmith* out, 24: blacksmiths working, S; *heet metal workers out, 27; sheet metal workers working, 4; electrician* out, 15; electricians working, 8; car men out, 220; car men working, 82. The report states that the agreement reported between the Pennsylvania Railroad and its employe* has not had the effect of bringing the men back to work because the agreement was made with a “stool pigeon committee” representating about ten percent of the employes. The publicity committee’s report further states: Agreement Discounted “This recent so-called agreement will have no effect whatever in bringing about a peaceful and proper settlement of the strike, as the Pennsylvania shopmen all over the lines refuse to return to work until the company follows out the orders of the labor board by abolishing this ‘rump committee and meet the duly authorised representatives of the men.” “The refusal of this company to carry out orders of the Federal Labor Board is the cause for their employes being out on strike today,” said Ray Vem Maple, secretary of the publicity committee. “The employes feel that this condition has existed long enough and by striking are upholding respect for the law and the constitutional functions of our Government.” CROWD DISAPPOINTED Scandal Supply Shut Off in Mel Trotter Divorce Case. By United Press GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., July 20. Mrs. Lottie M.
