President Ebert Now Drawing in American Money Only $1,250. AMBASSADOR GETS MORE Use of Coin by Embassy at Washington Proves Cumbersome. WASHINGTON —“Oscar,” says Baron Von Thurmann, charge d’affaires at the German embassy here to the embassy butler, "take half a bushel of marks and get enough American money for them to buy a peck of potatoes and a quart of milk for dinner.” Oscar himself is a good sample of what the German mark will do, or, rather, will not do these days, in America. Oscar is now drawing 624.000 German marks a year for his services at the embassy. That is 24.000 marks more than the president of the German Republic. Translated into American dollars that Is $1,300. When Baron Von Thurmann last took stock of the value of the mark the other day it took 480 of them to buy one American dollar. “Our money situation is terrible.” he observed. “Think of it: President Ebert’s salary, in American money, now amounts to only $1,250 a year—--600,000 marks.” Stenographers Paid Better The stenographers at the embassy are far 'better paid than President Ebert just now. The chief stenographer is paid the present equivalent of 1.036.800 marks a year. Before the war this would have bought approximately $253,200 in American money but now it means only $2,160 a year. The other stenographers, at SI,BOO a year, have the equivalent of 864.000 marks, which is nearly 50 per cent more than President. Ebert himself draws. The German government hasn’t yet fixed definitely the salary of its ambassador to the United States. Count Von Bemstorff when he left America ”by request” in 1917 was drawing 120,000 marks a year salary, but today that would mean only $250 a year 'n American money or a trifle over s2l a month. Prires High In Germany "The decline in the value of our mark," says Baron Von Thurmann, “means sky-high prices in Germany: coal is 2,400 marks ton, bread 18 marks a loaf, a bottle of wine 80 marks. “The average German mechanic draws about 250 marks a day pay, but. in American dollars, that means only * about 60 cents, at the present rate of exchange.” As long as Americans continue to visit Germany in large numbers, the German embassy can get along very well. All fees must be paid in American money and the present vise fee of $lO will buy 4,800 marks, instead of forty, the normal exchange rate "before the war.” JUMPS $2,000 BOND Man Facing Trial for Rape of 11-Yeajri Old Falls to Appear in Court. SHOPPING JOYS ARE UNKNOWN TO MERE MAN Bundle Totere Do Not Knovi Fascination of the Bargain Rushes. MARKETING IS DRUDGE Miss Alice Robertson, Congresswoman, Discusses Subject in An Address. WASHINGTON—Let Miss Ailed Robertson, the only member of het sex In Congress, tell why a woman will buck a bargain counter rush at the risk of being jabbed by 222 hatpins and trampled under 444 feet merely to purchase an article that’* marked from $2 to $1.98. "There is nothing in a woman’s life like shopping,” says “Aunt Alice” in a speech which has just seen ths light of day in the Congressional Record. "Men do not know how fascinating it is. Marketing may be a drudge, but shopping is a delight. Ths great department stores in our large cities are the most seductive places or- earth.” Turning to the bargain-hunters, Oklahoma’s lady Congressman goes on! ”1 do not like to say the desire to get something for nothing is a strong feminine trait, but to get as much as possible for as little as possible is almost universal with womankind. I have known women to use an hour of time and energy they could HI spare to go to a bargain sale where they might perhaps get a paper ol pins for 2 cents less than the ordinary price. "One dollar and ninety-eight cents Instead of $2 sounds wonderfully seductive and free trade appeals most to those with whom this often blind, unreasonable desire is predominant.” CITY AROUSED BY ATTACKS ON SIX CHILDREN Lynching Threatens When Mob Seizes Member of Persian Cult.
