Dan Beard Tells How to Make Birchbark Thing
Bp DAJf BEAM). Xational Scout Cummisiloner. Be good woodsmen, girls. That means, remember the laws of the open when your “bunch” Is off on a hike for birchbark. You know, of course, that to cut a belt-like strip of bark from a tree, t leaving a bare band entirely around the trunk will kill the tree. However, small pieces of bark reaching up and down the trunk, peeled off, will not prove fatal to the trees. But do not take too much from one; let sevBEARD. eral trees furnish you with bark. Soften the thick bark by soaking it in water. When pliable it is ready

to be made into various articles. When necessary to sew edges of an article together the bark must be wet and soft. The diagram (Fig. 1), represents a woodsy drinking cup in the making and it calls for a flawless piece of
birchbark five and one-half inches square. Bend forward and crease the bark through the center (Fig. IAA), then crease backward the two diagonal lines, B and B, from corners to center, and bring the two side edge* of center line together only at the points A and A (Fig. 2). Now bring the two points B and B (Fig 2), forward against the outside of cup part (Fig. 2), and fasten the B B points to top edge of cup. Thorns can be used as pins, and you will have a serviceable woodsy drinking cup that will not leak (Fig. 3). For your card case have a strip of bark like Fig. 4, with slit, D, cut near lower edge through which to pass the tongue, E. Fold up lower end to meat the lower edge of flap, and with very coarse darning needle and twine of inner bark fibre, or ordinary soft twine, saw the two sides of pocket part together, which fin-
ishes the card case (Fig. 5). You can also make most attractive sheets of letter paper from perfect strips of birchbark, on which letters inay be written with pen and ink (Fig. 6). Tomorrow: Beard Tells How to Make Fairy Indian Wigwams.
