SIR JAMES CRAIG PUTS LIGHT ON ULSTERS STAND Prime Minister for North Ireland Points Out Grave Peril. OLD ISSUES GONE, HE SAYS Home Rule Controversy Is Replaced by One of Greater Moment. By THE RT. BELFAST, July 11.—There still appears to be a good deal of misappre- ; taension regarding the north of Ire- i land, and in the minds of many peo-■ pie the idea appears to linger that j the Irish question of today is much the same as it has been since the ’eighties, and that it would be a good thing to have done with it for once and for aIL Not only to us In Ulster, but to the people of Great Britain, as well, there is a dangerous train of thought, which may engender a state of apathy (that would lead to disastrous results. Old lissue Is Gone The issue of home rule, as it was jinderstood In days gone by, has reased to exist in Its old form. The let of 1920 providing for one parliament at Dublin and one at Belfast, brought and end to the controversy which called forth the great efforts of Hartington and Chamberlain. In those days the issue could be simply defined as "home rule,” today the issue is different and the most impartial observes of the effects of that act must come to the conclusion that since home rule was established events have been marching slowly and tragically, but all the time surely irresistibly, to the climax foreseen by the opponents of home rule, when the issue to be decided will be whether ulster, which is british to the core and proud of the fact, is to have her connection with the mother country severed, and her fate handed over to ber enemies. Climax May Be Near It may be that the climax is nearer than some people believe. The peo pie of Ulster hope that it may be averted, but if it is forced upon them, they’ can give one answer and one answer only. That answer will be to resist to the end any attempt of the kind. This Is the cardinal issue today, and I would ask our friends who say they have tired of the Irish question to think out this aspect of the present problem. There will, no doubt, be those who will encourage them to |be apathetic about Ireland: there certainly will be those who will make themselves responsible for the continued camouflaging of the issue and the willful misrepresentation of Ulster. Not only Great Britain, but In America and France, there are avowed Republicans, who are persistently • spreading fantastic stories about pogroms against innocent Catholics and contemplated outrages at Belfast. These stories ai;e circulated with an object in view. I have denied them time and time again, but they still go on, their originators hoping that by repetition the prejudice aroused against Ulster will facilitate the end for which they are working. Campaign Against lister They fojm part of the plan of campaign against Ulster by those who wish to see her deprived of her parliament, and who have done their best to destroy the machinery of government as set up in northern Ireland. Sometimes I wonder if the people of England ever tried to appreciate exactly what the goveiment of northern Ireland means to them. It is a matter of Importance that they should know exactly what it stands for. Do they realize that this young government which has been set up in the north of Ireland is almost as important to them as the House of Commons in London, and that if destroyed, a vital blow will have been dealt to the whole fabric of the British Empire? Do they realize that in Ulster—the | oldest colony of the Crown —the 1 things we have taken our stand for and defend, are just those things

every Englishman, Scotsman and Welshman regards as his rights—the rights of British citizenship? Proud to Share Rights It has been our pride to share those rights with our fellow countrymen across the channel and to defend them when they were challenged. Our blood has mingled with theirs in the defense of our island home when dangers threatened from without, their Ideals are the same as ours; our flag is their flag. Our traditions are their traditions; our literature their literature. Others want us to give up those thing#. Our reply is that we will never surrender one of them or place ourselves in a position whereby they will be jeopardized. That is why I said our young government is almost as important to the people of Great Britain at this time, as their own Parliament. Means Dismemberment It is in fighting their fight that to us has come the call to resist the first actual attempt at dismemberment of the empire. If ever Ulster has been driven from her position, the work of dismemberment would have begun. That is why what is known as the Irish question is not the old question that years of controversy have made familiar to us. The old issue was grave enough, but it was never so grave as the present issue. In the old days the voice of Ulster was raised in warning against what might happen if Ireland were granted heme rule. Today Ireland has home rule and the events taking place show how real those warnings were. It may be that the wiser counsel will yet prevail and that the north and south will settle down to anew arrangement for this government of Ireland. On our own we will do everything to forward the realization to that end. But in the event of that realization being shattered and the attempt is made to destroy the government of the north, which has no predatory designs of southern Ireland, Ulster, wrill on her own behalf, and on behalf of the wider imperial interests which would be involved, make the same answer as any loyal Englishman would make if threatened in a similar way.
