RECORD YEAR IN PROSPECT Building and Lumber Business Greatest in History, Dealer Says. Even if the lumber and building business during the remainder of 1922 slumps off greatly from what it has been during the first half of the year, the year as a ■whole will go down as a record-breaker, according to Herbert E. Hill, president of the Speedway Lumber Company. Speaking of the situation Mr. Hill said: “If we barely gat by during the rest of this year we shall have experienced the greatest year in our history. Last year was a record breaking one, but so far this year our sales record has reached a mark equal to 86 per cent of last year’s business. Business continues strong, and all Indications point to considerable building operations during the remainder of the year. Herbert Hoover, in a recent address. made the following statement: “Our transportation facilities are below the needs of our country, and unless we have a quick resumption of railroad plants the whole community will be gasping from a strangulation caused by insufficient transportation the moment building activities resume. “The railroads must replace their worn out equipment and the amount of material to be used is by no means a small item. Those lean years In the building game from 1913 to 1920 inclusive have caused these days to be busy ones indeed. The country has grown in these years and there has been no new abodes for the increased population, and the property that had been constructed before the lean period has suffered and depreciated from lack of re;>airs. Conditions point to a boom for some years to come. High war time prices will tend to keep some values up, and since the world can wait no longer for places of habitation lulls in the building game, if they do come, wilt not be for long, and prices will most certainly not drop appreciably, at least for some time to come. Decreases in lumber prices must come, if they do come, either by decreases in the wages of labor or by decreases in freight rates, and both alternatives seem to be remote possibilities." BUSINESS GROWS RAPIDLY Demand for Building Supplies Increases Steadily. Contractors, builders and fanners now have the opportunity of buying paint, roofing, roof cement, fencing, contractors’ and farm supplies under the most advantageous circumstances, according to an official of the recently organized Indiana Paint, Roof and Supply Company. 132 South Pennsylvania St. According to his statement the business was organized by men long experienced in these lines for the express purpose of affording this service. The company is composed of H. D. Clark, J. W. Collins and E. J. Bohall, all former employes for several years of Hurst & Cos. “None of us were with Hurst & Cos. for less than six years,’’ he said. “While in the employ of that firm all of us realized there was a great de-

mand for a concern handling a line of goods constantly in demand, as is the case with our merchandise. So we got together and started this business with the plan of operating not only a general supply store for the buying public and the regular retail customer, but for contractors, builders and farmers. This would enable us to cover the entire field of consumption. “Specializing as we are at this time on roofing, fencing and paint, we took unusual pains to make a paint connection of the most satisfactory kind, and we have obtained the very best possible results. The proof of this is a long line of thoroughly satisfied customers. “As time goes on we Intend to broaden the scope of our activities until we have reached a point where we are in a position to supply any want of any character in our line. “Business conditions appear to ys to be better than for a long time past. Considerably more confidence is being manifested and buyers are coming back in the field more freely than for a long time past. This is, of course, decidedly encouraging, as it indicates a resumption of general business activity. Naturally our line of work, which is closely affiliated with the building Industry, has been very quick to feel the effects of the tremendous building boom of recordbreaking proportions now under way in Indianapolis. “With the year half gone we are assured practically that by January 1 all the hopes and Judgment on which our business was founded will have been fully Justified.” OIL MEN CIVILIZE TOWN Commercial Interests Invade Picturesque Frontier. RIVERTON, Wyo., July 10.—The “Pilot Butte country,” made famous through the exploits of “Bill” Carlisle, noted train bandit, who, escaping from the Rawlins State Penitentiary in the fall of 1919, terrorized passengers on transcontinental trains as they passed through this section of the country, is at last to be touched by advancing civilization. Oil promoters are completing preparations for the drilling of test wells in the Pilot Butte oil structure, and successful operations will bring commercial interests that will invade this picturesque frontier country. HALF-TONE WORK IMPROVED Nickel Replaces Copper in New Process. For many years the engraving world has been seeking constantly for improvements over the existing meth ods of making halftones, according to E. E. Stafford, president of the Stafford Engraving Company. According to Mr. Stafford a great improvement over the old copper half-tone has been discovered in “Stafford-Tones," a nickel faced half-tone which he says prints better and wears longer than copper plates which have been in use in the past. In speaking of this he said: “The defects of copper are well known. It is so soft that valuable plates are often ruined by light scratches. It wears out quickly on the printing press. Printing ink corrodes and eats it. “Nickel, on the other hand, is a comparatively hard metal. It resists scratches, and is corrosion-proof. It stands up under the grind of the printing press far longer than copper. And because it prints cleaner and more brilliantly than copper, printers have long preferred to use nickel electrotypes instead of the original copper half-tones. “It has thus been clear for many years that it would be a long step in advance if original half-tones could be produced with a nickel surface, and many attempts have been made. But merely to make a regular copper half tone and then nlckelplate it will not do. A half-tone is made up of many dots almost microscopic in size Nickelplating fills up the tiny spaces between these dots and causes such a plate to print dirty and to lose all detail. “However, we have been able to overcome all these difficulties, and have applied for patents on the process. Ptafford-Tones thus produced are deep, clean and brilliant. In addition to these qualities, they have long life and immunity to common accidents, due to the hardness of nickel. "Stafford-Tones are no longer an experiment. They are in daily use in many of the best printing house# of the city and State. And they are being approved in an ever-widening territory, for we are receiving inquiries and orders from nearly every State in the Union, as well as from Canada and even from across the Atlantic.” BUNDED* ENTERS POLITICS Bay State Attorney Announces Candidacy for Office. OLD IDEAS DIE SLOWLY Medical Science Forced to Overcome False Theories. Preconceived notices die slowly and regardless of how fallacious they may be it is difficult to uproot them once they are firmly established In the public mind, is the opinion expressed by G. R. Cruzan, proprietor of the Sulphur-Vapor Bath Institute, 332% W. Washington St. “In no line of endeavor do these old fashioned, obsolete ideas, persist with more determination than In the medical world,” Mr. Cruzan said. “Years ago people became imbued wfNa the idea that certain cures for diseases and ills of the human body were associated inspearably with certain localities, and even today this idea persists among many. “This was a natural idea generations ago. It was found that waters with curative properties w’ere found in certain localities. Patients went to those places to take baths or get the benefits of the waters, and immediately these places and the results obtained became identical in the minds of many. “Now it is a well settled and established fact that it is the medical properties of water, for example, that cure and not the locality, but it was hard to get this old idea out the public mind. "On ounce of fact Is worth a ton or more of theory or preconceived ideas. It has taken many years to get even the most intelligent people to realize that suphurr baths may be given here in Indianapolis as well as at the famous sulphur bath places of the world. One of the best methors of giving these baths is the Dr. Kruse system, which is at the same time scientific and sanitary. It is one of the most effective treatments known for rheumatism, neuritis and all forms of illness due to the presence of poison in the human system. “The Dr. Kruse sj-Btem has the !ivdorsement not only of on our patients, but of reputable physicians and they have no hesitation In saying that the baths as given here are as effective as those at the most famous sulphur springs. “The basic truth behind the system Is that it Is founded on the age old truth that nature in the long run is the best curative agency. It strikes at the root of a patient's troubles by driving off poisonous acids which accumulate in the body and retard the circulation of the blood. Our massage. deep reaching expels stagnant blood from the tissues and restores normal circulation. “The baths are particularly valuable to women who lead sedentary lives and are famous for the beneficial effects on the complexion.” f ~*' " Roy A.
