Proper Inductance Coil Adds Efficiency to Set

Uniformity of operation and the effectiveness of a radio receiver are in a great measure dependent upon the care used in the construction, as well as the design, of those units which go to make up the whole. Those who build their own outfits In most cases go wrong when making the simplest piece of radio equipment —the inductance coil. Losses within the radio circuit r©> suit not only in weaker signals but also in lack of selectivity—the ability to tune one station in and another out. Even with the most common materials at hand, a fairly good radio coil can be built without much trouble if a few precautions are taken. The form upon which the winding la placed must be moisture proof. A cardboard tube will do—if it is dried in the oven. While still warm apply a coat of shellac. Dry again and then give it another coat —both inside the tube and out. When you are sure that the tube is dry, start winding. Taps If it is desired to take off taps at

intervals, do it while the winding is in progress. If the wire is of a size not smaller than No. 26, the taps may be taken off conveniently after the winding has been finished. The work will be done more neatly, too, if a soldering iron is handy. When completed, the winding should be thoroughly dried In an oven so that all moisture may be removed from the surface of the coil and from the insulation. Then apply a final cOat of shellac and dry again. An induction coil which has been treated in this manner will always function uniformly. Damp, muggy weather wfil not affect it in the was that such Weather affects so many of the cheaply-built receivers. The use of enameled wire in the construction of radio receivers is ill advised. A double covered wire—either silk or cotton —is recommended. Tap leads should not be Jumbled Into a bunch. Keep them separated and short as possible. GAME WARDENS BUSY Make 162 Arrests During Month of June, Says Report. . Good Cooking Makes Camp Much More Like Home

It is wonderful how the camping habit got hold of people about the time t scouting came into existence, and how, year after year, more and more people, especially boys, have gone off into the woods and had a bully time. In toy day the fellows who went camp ing were real adventurers, BEARD camping was more of an adventure (with the ad left off) than It is today. That’s because we fellows who know how to camp have been writing more and more about the right way to camp, so that people now have a pretty good idea of the theory of camping anyhow. Very Well, if* you are going camping, who is going to be camp cook? You are? Good! I suppose you know all about how to cook, eh? Hope you do, for the sake of the rest of the fellows. But in case you are Just a little rusty on the “how” of the thing, let me give you some advice: Let your cooking fire be small. I have done better cooking over a. fire, or bed of live coals no larger than the area of your two hands than I have over a big roaring fire that scorched my face. '
