WASHINGTON, July S.—Results of recent and forthcoming primary elections may cause Senator Truman Newberry of Michigan to lose his seat in the Senate. \ Elimination of Senators New. Indiana, and McCumber, North Dakota, means two votes against Newberry when his case is reported at the next session of Congress, antis believe. Only One Needed. If the successors of New and McCumber line up against Newberry only one more vote would be needed to unseat him, provided the rest of the Senate votes as it did on January 12 last, when Newberry retained his seat by a vote of 46 to 41. The one vote will be asked of the people of Michigan, Newberry’s own state. Kelly Starts Campaign. Representative Patrick Kelly, opposing Senator Townsend for the Michigan senatorial nomination, today begins his acti\-e speaking campaign with an address at Charlotte, Mich. He will announce in that speech that if nominated and elected he will vote to unseat Newberry. CLUB COMPLIMENTS GLENN Hoosier Motorists Like Way Police Captain Handles Heavy Traffic. Capt. Michael Glenn of the traffic force was 'ommended in a statement by the Ho- er Motor Club for making arrangements for the protection of motorists and pedestrians at busy crossings, in a statement issued by the club today. Traffic officers are now stationed at Meridian and S.xteents Sts., Capitol Ave. and Sixteenth St.. Meridian and Thirtieth Sts. and Clifton and Thirtieth streets. The club also commended the board of public works in increasing the radius of the curbing at Thirtieth St. and Capitol Ave. and Thirtieth and Meridian Sts. NAMES BOARD MEMBERS Governor Makes Three Appointments on State Bodies. Governor McCray has made the following appointments: Robert R- Batton of Wabash, member of the war memorial commission, to succeed Carl L- Houston of Marion, resigned. Miss Helen Benbridge of Terre Haute to fill the unexpired term of Charles E. Coffin of Indianapolis as member of the board of trustees of the State normal school. Charles A. Eight authorities on sociological conditions in Indiana are to give twoweeks’ course for students in the Indiana University summer school. Dr. Amos W. Butler, secretary of the board of State charities: J. A. Brown, supervisor* of field service for the board of State charities; Arthur H. Estabrook of the Carnegie Foundation and James A. When the police Investigated a reprt of two men prowling in an alley near 426 E. Market St., early thi smorning they found Eugene Beaver, 321 E. STILLHIGHER Prices of Food Stuffs Are Expected to Reflect Effects of Tariff. BY KENNETH W. CLARK, United Press Staff Correspondent. WASHINGTON, July B.—Further increased in the cost of food are in prospect. Senator Walsh, Democrat, Massachusetts, forecasted today on the heels of the Labor Department, announcement that eighteen out of twenty-two cities registered increases during the past month. Officials of the Department of Commerce likewise predicted increases. Walsh charged that the high food schedules in the tariff bill would operate to push prices still higher. Commerce department officials held that agricultural prices, now on the rebound after the severe slump, are responsible. $28,000 FOR RILEY FUND Contributions Reported by Captains of Memorial Teams at Meeting. Additional contributions to the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children, amounting to approximately $28,000, were reported at a meeting of team captains and workers at the Chamber of Commerce. Among the contributions reported at the meeting was one for $5,000 from Dr. and Mrs. Lafayette Page and one for a similar amount from Mrs. W. H. H. Miller. July B.—The first big price cut as a result of lower freight rates was announced here today by Standard Oif of Indiana. Effective Monday, the price of gasoline, kerosene and all other petroleum products will be reduced to the full extent of the freight rate reduction This is estimated will mean a saving to the retail buyer of gasoline ranging from one-fifth to two-flfths of a cent a gallon. No Orders Here. No instructions to cut the price of gasoline have been received by the local office of the Standard Oil Company. No reductions greater than one or two-tenths of a cent a gallon are anticipated in the near future. HOLD-UPS BUSY McPherson Forced From Car and Relieved of Money by Highwaymen. Two hold-up men forced Malcolm McPherson, 1509 Central Ave., from his automobile, near Casino Gardens, last night and relieved him of $6, saying he -would find his automobile a “half mile north,” police were informed. The car was found later at Fall Creek and Illinois St. The police believe the two men who did the work were the same as held up Edward Gaffney, taxi driver, stealing hi* car and $18.45, Thursday night.
