Julia Hoyt, Stage Beauty, Has BY WALTER D. HICKMAN. Crackers and milk will not be the diet ot Mrs. Lydig Hoyt, who, in private life is a New York society beauty and the wife of a New York attorney. While “learning to act," Julia Hoyt, as she is known on the e<age, will do It in a de luxe fashion. But Julia Hoyt has one thing in common with every one on the stage—hard ahd sincere work before her. For seven weeks she has given up her wonderful country home out of New York City, and is hare in Indianapolis rehearsing dally with the Stuart Walker Company at the Murat. I motored to the Woodstock Country Club yesterday afternoon with her. The object of my little journey with her was to find out just why she desires to make something out of herself on the stage. She made the biggest kind of hiit personally with me when she declared that she was not disgusted or tired of society, but that she considers the stage a “very pleasant job and not a pastime." “I think all' people are highly interested In any one taking up a Job,** she told me at the club, while watching Tilden on the tennis court.
-1- -I- -IThe Job Is the Thing. Julia Hoyt has a “Job,” and a big one; that she realizes. She has come to Mr. Walker for training. She will play any part assigned her, and she doesn't expect her name in big type or in the electric sign. At first she had difficulty in meeting the objections of her family. At first she played a small part In the movies, and last season appeared with William Faversham in a revival of “The Squaw Man.” Her job right now is to fit herself 1 for her work. She told me that she had a more genuine Interest in the stage than anyone suspects. She does not intend to give up her friends, her country home, her husband or her i social position. Women all over the world work, , and they do not give up their social positions or their home. Why should Mrs. Hoyt? “Coming here is just like going on a trip,” she said. “I leave my country home and husband for a short time.” She realizes that she must convince the public and the critics that she is sincere in her love for a stage career. Like Going to School. Mrs. Hoyt, as I chatted with her in Mr. Walker’s box at the tennis tournament, gave me the Impression that she was just like the daughter of a
