Luxuries of One Generation Are Necessities of the Next. The axiom of many centuries standing that luxuries of one generation become the absolute necessities of everyday life of the next, applies with peculiar and striking force to home building and home equipment, according to Roy A. Pearson, specialist in the laying and repairing of hardwood floors, stairways and hardwood work of all kinds. “The growth in the demand for hardwood work of the highest grade has been little short of remarkable,'* Mr. Pearson said. “It was in 1907 I gave up general contracting work and began to devote my entire time and energies to specializing in hard wood flooring both in the laying of new floors and the repairing and refinishing of work already installed. “At that time many persons, including some of my very best friends told me the field was far too limited to justify any one entering it for exclusive work, but so general has become the use of hardwood In the past few years in homes and other buildings that none ever thinks of saying that any longer. "At the t.me I started in business for myself my entire force consisted of a helper and myself. My equipment was hardly more than a bicycle on which I rode to and from the Jobs I worked on. Year by year the business grew steadily until it became necessary' for me to give up all active work on floors myself, open a downtown office and devote myself largely to the executive and administrative end of the business. It was not long until I added a wareroom in which to take care of the constantly grow.ng variety cf stock and materials with which to carry on a steadily increasing business. “I have noticed that people are coming to realize more and mors the value of hardwood flooring. Its cleanliness with a resulting saving in time and labor in the home, entirely distinct and separate from its beauty, have served to make it a universally accepted piece of home equipment "he worn rccu res exper. workm- n to do a Job satisfactory to the exacting home owners of the present generation. for they have come to realze that a poor bit of hardwood work, carelessly or .mperfectly done, is l.ttle, if any, better than none at all. "In our own bus.ness X have found that it pays to use none other than the best grad-3 of materials and tho highest type of workmen.” SHOULD HAVE CIVIC PRIDE Citizens Need to Occupy Themselves With Community Affairs. Community affairs should occupy the attention of all citizens regardless of their business or professional affairs, according to M. L. Oalerman, doctor of chiropractic, 425 State Life building. According to him there is far more to the practice of a profession or the ordinary pursuit of a business career than the serv.ee given to a customer or client. “Practice of a profession enables a practitioner to take a real interest in community affairs,” he said, “and to

Plate Glass Now an Essential Factor in Every Modern Home
• r~*k ? 8*^9196 ■aßßteML' &.-,< . - kg3k. •asjgp - .■-
Plate glass Is rapidly coming into universal use in the home and has become almost of much of a modern home necessity as the furniture itself according to Parker 11. James, president of the Indianapolis Glass Company, manufacturers and Jobbers, 1002 Kentucky avenue. Speaking of the use of glass in the home, Mr. James said. “Plate glass tops for the dressing table, dresser, buffet, or any piece of nice furniture in the home is being used more all the time, and people are beginning to realize that they not only beautify, and add dignity to the home, but they protect the furniture from scratches, and mars of any kind, on the dresser or dressing table, a few drops of perfume may spoil a finely finished surface, and on the buffet a hot dish will spoil the finish, necessitating either to be re-finished, and the cost of re finishing would be a great deal more than the cost of a plate glass top. "These are cut to any shape to ex actly fit the furniture/for which it is intended, the edge of the glass is ground and polished so there la no danger of cutting in handling. “Business men value the plate glass top for the office desk as a help in a very practical way in the development and betterment of community life. "Community interest means individual interest in everything tending toward tho development and betterment of our city. The success of each merchant is felt by all other merchants and every citizen. That is why it is to the Interest of each individual to support and patronize to h s fullest ability the industries of his own town and community. “To me community spirit means brotherly interest, a love thy-neighbor determinat:on to put into use a practical common sense way. It is tins community spirit which make us real ize the value wo chiropractors can put into our service to the people of a community in the maintenan e of the health of a community and li> th s spirit we carry on our work. “I only wish I could make poople realize exactly wha chlropractory has done and still is doing for the people,

measure of efficiency, papers and other data can be kept under the glass out of the way, yet always In sight. Desks always keep their newness if I protected in this manner. “The demand for plate glass far exj ceeds the supply. The automobile and j body manufacturers alone are now using more plate glass than was produced in tbe United States a few years ago, and then, too. the business rnen realize the value of a modern front in j their storerooms to properly display I their goods. We design and construct j store fronts for any kind of business; j the small windows for a jeweler will I of course not answer for a hardware ! merchant, and with a little thought I along these lines, it can be made to pay. “We handle building gloss of all kinds, and a.so install windshields and automobile body glass. “Another part of our business that ! has been increasing is beveled plate j glass for french doors, and also full | length mirrors, in closet and dressing | room doors. These can also be attached j to any kind of a door, with out re--1 moving it. this Is done by using a I small mould ng and placing the mhTor j over the old door panels and is gomeI thing any T;omn can appreciate, as j it gives one a full length view.” | | and for this reason I nm only too j klad at any time to have persons drop ;n for a chat with me. “My office always is open to those j in need of treatment of a chiropractic character and have not suffic ent financ.al meins to pay for them. None in financial distress ever is turned away by me. I think I am safe in saying that the great majority of chiropractors are engaged in their profession not alone*to make a living for themselves, hut to do good to >nfortrnate person* who are in need of chiropractic adjustments. The rapid growth in popularity of the proses sion with the pubi c is sufficient evidence that It is making good, for no business or profession can succeed unless it has a firm foundation of real service in a community."

WOOD PRICES HIT BOTTOM Dealer Says No Further Drops May Be Looked For Very Soon. That lumber prices have dropped as low as they reasonably may be expected to go and that there Is every probability of an upward tendency in prices making itself felt In the near future is the opinion expressed by Ross W. Hill Jr. of the Indianapolis Lumber Company. “The almost universal opinion among experienced lumber men who are in a good position to Judge present and future conditions is the present price level will not be further lowered.” Mr. Hill sakl. "Asa matter -of fact the present value of lumber I is on a very conservative basis as far as prices are concerned. “For thte past year the lumber business has been on a highly competitive basis in I(ndianapolis. The companies were all prepared and w'aitlng i for the rush of business they knew | was sure to come. This was the case not only in Indianapolis but all over the United States as well. When the start came many conpanies got off with a rush ahead of those that were : tied up and hampered by labor trou- | bles and unfavorable conditions. “One of the very’ first cities to get ' under way in building activity was Indianapolis, and it set a pace for the other c ties of the United States which war far too fas - , a.’d furious for many of them, fast in the sense of the great number and value of building ! operations and fhrfous in the intense competition. This is as it should be. not necessarily a survival of the fittest but merchandising of a character permitting the home builder to obtain j his requirements at a low cost and at the same time give the lumber dealer a modest and reasonable profit, j “The bed rock, bankrupt low lever ‘ in lumber prices was reached approximately fifteen months ago and staved on this undesirable basis until several thousand small medium and large operators of lumber mills were driven out of business. Largo manufacturers and other business mer of sound judgment were hard hit. but were sufficiently strong to weather the storm and pull through. The situation at I that time was particularly desperate. ! but gradually it began to clear. SalI aries and wages were reduced, effl- > ciency underwent a corresponding increase and after a long and bitter j fight dealers found they were losing from 12 to J 6 on each thousand feet of I lumber sold. "Again they went to work on the I solution of the problem and have succeeded in getting themselves into such shape that with the small increase in price recently effective they can now look to the future with some degree of confidence.
