THORNTON IN APPEAL AFTER VOTERECOUNT Judge of Superior Court Carries Election Contest to Another Decision. Viliam W. Thornton, incumbent on bench tn Superior Court Room 1, appealed to the Marlon County Circuit Court from the decision of June 5, whereby the county commissioners ,-tsrt declared James M. Leathers the duly constituted Republican nominee for the Judgeship of Room 1. His appeal bond of SI,OOO was signed by Jesse C. Moore. Judge Thornton was defeated for nomination, the first count showed, by 33 votes. This total was increased by the recount asked by Judge Thornton. In the suit filed contesting the nomination, the Judge alleged fraud in the primary election and illegal casting out and marking of ballots.

By PR. B. H. BISHOP. Ii 1 P there is a baby in your home, keep constant vigil against files. Any fiy may carry the germs of infantile paralysis. True, the cases in which files have been proved to be carriers of the disease are few. Still, no risks should be run. Generally infs mile . rectly from the sick to the well person, yet it may be transmitted by a third, who has been in contact with a victim. The early symptoms, as a rule, are fever, weakness, fretfulness or irritability and vomiting. Later there is pain in the back, neck, arms or legs, accompanied by great weakness. Often paralysis does not result; these are known as abortive cases. They, however, are as infections as the others. If paralysis is to occur It usually appears from the second to the fifth day. The germ or tiny virus of the dis ease is present in the discharges from the nose, throat and bowels of patients. It may also be present in the noses and throats of healthy children in the same family. Thus it is necessary to keep the children from a family in which there is a case of infantile paralysis away from otoher children. All cases of infantile paralysis must be reported to the local department of health, which then placards the house. During an infantile paralysis epidemic It is well to observe certain rules. The house or apartment ihould be kept absolutely clean. Windows should be screened against flies. Garbage stould not be allowed to accumulate; Its receptacle 6hould be kept tightly covered. All forms of vermin, bed bugs, roaches and body-lice, should be killed. Bodily cleanliness Is especially important.

Pick a Cool Place for Baby to Nap in

Next to the problem of feeding, the question of how to mako the baby comfortable while he sleeps is the most puzzling of all hot weather problems In the daily care of the baby. The coolest place in the house should be found for the day-time naps. This will usually be somewhere on the first floor, rather than in an upstairs bedroom. Quite often in the worst weather a pallet on the floor of the living-room will af•ford more comfort than any bed, but this selection of the best place for the baby to sleep is one of those matters in which the judgment of the mother must be exercised. The baby should be completely undressed when he takes his nap. Avery thin cotton gown, open at the neck and short-sleeved, is perhaps the best garment to wear, at least for the older baby. A tiny baby can usually ... made comfortable in crib or carriage, and if he naps in his carriage it can easily bo moved about in search of the coolest spot. Sleeping rooms are so hot in the early part of the night that it may be best to keep the baby out doors in the evening until the rooms have cooled somewhat, or put him to sleep In the porch, if here he can he protected from mosquitoes. The main thing is to see that in the course of the twenty-four hours the baby has the necessary number of hours of sleep, even if the usual schedule has to be somewhat disturbed. A bath in tepid water Just before going to bed will help cool the skin and make the baby fall asleep more readily. No soap should be used, and the flesh should be patted gently to dry It, not rubbed. A little powder may be sifted into the groin and under the arms and into the folds of the skin around the neck, but too much powder only makes the irritation worse.

COMELY CHILD IS TAKEN FROM GYPSY TRAIN Mary Boyd, 13, Returned to Her Father, Not Mistreated, She Declares. LOGANSrORT, Ind., Juno 2L—Mary Boyd, 13, a comely child, was returned to her father, Alfred Boyd of Tipton, after having been taken from a band of gypsies here. The girl said she had left home June 6 and joined the gypsies, in order, she said, to reach the home of her mother In Gas City. Her parents are estranged. ”1 am homesick and tired,” she said, “and want to go home." She insisted that she had been humanely treated by the gypsies, who have been trading horses through this section of the State, and against whom the authorities placed no charge. The presence of the girl, apparently an alien in the gypsy band, attracted the attention of Sheriff Mummert, at Delphi, whose inquiries resulted in the father coming here for her. Boyd said he had been searching for bis daughter and had asked police help.
