LUMBER PRICES MUST GO HIGHER Building Boom and Diminishing Supply Responsible, Dealer Says. Lumber prices have hit the bottom and cannot be expected to fall lower than they are at present Is the opinion expressed by Forest A. Hill, president of the Speedway Lumber Company. In fact he says that any changes in prices necessarily must be upward In view of the record breaking amount of building now under way In Indianapolis. Speaking of the situation, Mr. HIU said: “The Speedway Lumber Company Is still enjoying the same degree of prosperity that It has enjoyed in the weeks past. Most of our business consists of small homes erected by the future occupants and by several building companies who are selling homes on the easy Installment plan. In fact we never experienced such a great year before. “Prices are a little higher than a year ago, but we have noted an increase in business rather than a tendency toward cnrtatllment. The public Is wi*" In building now. Costs of operatlou nave decreased in all lines appreciably. But they cannot be reduced to prewar levels and we must abandon all hopes of deflating the value of our stocks when such deflation must come through wage reductions both on the part of manufacturers and ourselves. At this time there must be universal co-operation between, employer and employe and the harmonizing influences of settled convictions in the minds of our people that the greatest resources of the greatest country on earth can'only be made to yield a profitable return on the Investment of hard work and money by downright industry and honest effort.

"We received this word from a lumber manufacturer during the past week. It is not our purpose to assume the role of prophet as to what may happen to lumber prices hereafter so much as it Is to promote ideas that are based on substantial facts, reinforced by certain fundamental conditions that cannot be carelessly omitted for whatever of consideration we must give to the Important subject of market conditions. In expressing our opinions, we must not te swayed by our prejudices. It Is our best judgment that we shall witness a steady Improvement in business conditions generally In all lines and that we shall finally reach the pinnacle of prices gradually rather than by sudden impulses. The elimination of elements that have heretofore entered largely Into price elevations has come about through the fear of speculators to purchase larger blocks of lumber and the unwillingness of the manufacturers of lumber to permit these elements to place larger orders for future shipments. Lumber has accordingly been told during the past two months to the natural distributing factors or to the larger consumers direct, thus avoiding an unwelcome situation that has too frequently been brought about by speculative buying. Home building, following a perfectly natural demand for domicile* for thousands of homeless people; industrial expansion and the need for better facilities for our great Industries; car material for much needed material for our railroads and eundry other demand* for lumber for repair work, boxing, crating, and the like, will all contribute toward utilizing all the lumber that can be made available for use the remaining months of the year. Stocks on band at all mill sourcea of supply have been reduced to the point where there remains only depleted stocks of lumber ready for Immediate requirements.”

Lure of the Radio Proves ~ Irresistible to Amateurs

In no line of science has there been greater development in a shorter time than In the rapid growth of the radiophone. Practically unheard of only a short time back, the radiophone Is today one of the best known devices in the world, and certainly Is the most popular. It seems to have appealed equally to 1 young and old, and every one from j octogenarians to the kids is '.aklng a deep interest In It. Kndio equipment shop;, have sprung I up with lightning like rapidity throughout the city In recent months and It seems almost Impossible that only a year ago the only store In all Indianapolis to handle radio equipment exclusively was the Hoosier Radio Company, 9 Pembroke Arcade. The company has found Its business so good and Increasing at such a rate that It has been found necessary, according to L. H. Smith, president and manager of the company, to open anew place at the Daylight Corner In the room occupied by the Merchants Heat and Light Company. "Wa were the pioneers In Indianapolis in this business and for a long time were the only firm In the field,” Mr. Smith said, “So novel was the Idea that when I first decided to engage in the business all sorts of dire predictions of failure were made for mo. I suppose the very novelty of the Idea made It appear fantastic to persons who did not have the real radio vision to see to what extent the business would soon develop. “They told me the Hoosier Radio Com- j pany could not last; that It would be

A. L. A. PROTECTS ITS MEMBERS Interests of Safeguarded by Association. | Service such as no motorist Is able to ! give himself Is afforded the automobile ; owner by the Automobile Legal Association, according to John U. Hope, Indiana manager of the organization, 612 Merchants Bank building. “There Is no doubt but that the assoi elation has proved Itself Intensely popular with motorists throughout the county," Mr. Hope said. “The popularity has been based on the only thing which can bring results in nn organization of this character and that Is the valuable service givlen the members. This, comes of course ! through the fact that the individual automobile owner naturally operates In a very * limited geographical field. He lives In ! one community, spends the greater part j of his time there, and when he gets several hundred or thousand miles away from home as the case may be he naturalIly finds himself In strange surroundings. . “Right here is whete our organization comes In and does good work for him. !We are able to give our members free emergency road service in ten of tho most ! traveled States in the Union. Attorneys employed by the association give members legal assistance free of charge and the whole weight of our powerful organization is behind our members at all \ times. In Indiana alone we have 57 at- ; torneys and garages on our lists and the entire State is covered thoroughly. “We are able to give the motorist a service he cannot hope to glTo himself,

short lived and I soon would be out looking for a Job. They told me It would be impossible to build up a successful business for a ‘plaything,’ for a ‘toy’ like the radio. They said that pulling music and conversation out of the air was ridiculous and fantastic. And now , see what has happened, j “In fact, some of the very persons who I were tho most pessimistic are now do- ' ing their levol best to break into the j radio business themselves. A remarkable thing Is that the groveth and development of the radio has been due more to the youngsters of America than to any other one cause. It wan .he youngsters who first became interested and who turned to the radio game with all the enthusiasm and pep of youth. Their enthusiastic talk about the radiophone first was received with tolerant contempt by the adults in the family, then they began to look upon it as an interesting plaything and finally began to realize Just what a wonderful device It was. 1 The result is that we now find railroad trains, automobiles, hotels, apartment houses, business concerns, homes and about everything else radio equipped, and no kid In the length and breadth of the United States Is more interested or more enthusiastic than some of the fathers. • “Our company does a great bulk of Its business with amateurs and we are prepared at any time to supply the public and our customers with about anything | they may want from the most minute 1 part on up to the completely installed | instruments of large size.”

and at a far more reasonable price than he ever could hope to obtain in an lndi- j vidual capacity. The association came | Into existence fifteen years ago for the j express purpose of protecting members from the luquitous practice of 'speed traps' then so much In vogue, by which ; constables made fat fees out of fines j assessed against motorists. Through our efforts these traps were abolished, but tbo work of the association went on in other directions. “The service our attorneys give is par- I ticularly valuable. In many Instances j tourists have been freed of charges 1 ngainstThem through the efforts of our lawyers. But one of the principal ways In which this branch of the service is made effective and valuable 1s that onr lawyers make it a point to advance hearing in court as rapidly as possible. This results In cases against our members being tried much faster in many instances than other cases and results in a great saving of time. This element of time often is decidedly valuable to the motor- j Ist who is in a hurry to get on his way. “Members of the association likewise are defended In the same territory if suits are brought against them for damage to j property. Our experience has shown that; many automobillsts pay for property! damage for which they should not be made to pay. They endure the imposition j in many instances for the simple reason | they consider it cheeer to pay than to j go to the expense of hiring a lawyer to fight the case through. Many thousands of dollars have been saved to our members through this channel. “We have made a great point of the cheapness of our service and the membership dues are so reasonable that they do not exceed tho cost of a good meal.” |

VALUE OF TILE IS RECOGNIZED Veteran Dealer Considers It Ideal Material for Many Purposes. So rapid has been the Increase In the nse of tile in recent times that the business has grown to larger proportions than ever was anticipated, according to Arthur Braun, veteran tile dealer, and prealdent of the Braun Tile Company, 2308 North Delaware street. “I believe I am the oldest tile man in point of service in this part of the .country,” Mr. Braun 6ald, “and I have seen the business grow from relatively small proportions to its present size. The use of tile is so, sensible, so economical, so perfectly suited for so many widely differenet purposes that there Is no end of its possibilities. To begin with, It absolutely is sanitary, and that is a matter of tremendous Importance when it comes to the construction of bathrooms and other places where sanitation is of vital Importance. The ease with which it is cleaned and maintained makes tile particularly valuable for mantel, floor and wall work, and this fact makes it about as economical a material as can be used. The Item of upkeep in building is an Important one, too, frequently overlooked, and here is where tile proves its value over and over. “Our company pays particular attention to repair work and Fred Braun

! general manager of the company, and myself have made a great study of the ; business and we are In a position through our company to give the very best servico on repair and replacement work. We have adopted for our firm ] motto the very simple motto, ‘First-Class Workmanship,' and we feel that this 1 covers the ground of our business activities as thoroughly as would several I pages of carefully prepared statements, j “In the tile business, and as in every I other, the element of service is a factor ' of vital Importance, and we believe our | company is In an excellent position to give the very highest grade of service to our customers in anything pertaining to tile work."
