Black Friday May Have , Had Its Origin in Tribe Original ‘Poor Fish ’ Might Well Have Been Named From Habits of Species .
BY XOBA KAY. Some people Mane the suffrage movement on Susan 15. Anthony, others contend that XanDppe. who made life so miserable for poor old Socrates, that he finally took to poison, white mule or some other fata! drink, was the first to agitate the question of woman's rights, but St remains for ,T. W. Berdenkeeher. fish culturist of the Riverside Park State Hatchery, to show the world the original and most perfect example of Ideal domestic life from the famine point of view. For out in the qniat pools that nestle among the green hills at the park, the visitor finds an example of life as it would be lived, if ail the Lney Stones and other advanced feminists had their way about things. That old song about everybody working but father, who Just sits around all day" was never a popular air among the fish. For out in the fish pond poor father fish is the busiest bass in the pond. 04 course, a lot of his work does consist of Jut itting around on a nest of fish eggs, waiting for a few dozen young fishes to hatch. But even that gets tiresome after a time. And father has to stay on the Job any time from vn to sixteen day, depending* on the warmth of the water. LONGER SITTING IX COLD WEATHER. On summer days, when the temperature of the ponds is around 82 degrees, the little fishes hatch in about a week. But when it goes down to 6S degrees the domesticated old gentlemen has to sit in his little box nest for two weeks or more, before he may consider his duty to the family done. Xor is it done even then, for, according to fish authorities, after the young fish start flipping around it Is up to father to see that they stay in their own back yard and keep them from annoying their mother. And what is motner doing? She is unloving woman's new emancipation—taking afternoon tea with o?her oarefree lady fish, lecturing on "Father's Place is in the Home,” taking gymnastic exercise by jumping for water flies that skim above the pond—in ofhr words. Just generally enjoying life. Xor should this carefree life of Mrs. Fish be regarded as anything new. either. As far back as "fishologisrs” can remember, it has been the mother fish who had everything hor own way. Xo doubt H. G. Wells can prove that the feminist movement had it's origin back in the days when all of us wore fish, apd those who remained in that state clung tenaciously to their original rights. *'PA FISH" EASILY EMBARRASSED. In spite of centuries of training, however. the henpecked husband fish is still easily embarrassed by having hundreds

of eyes focused on him everv Sunday when visitors came out to view the ponds, and for this reason it has been necessary for Mr. Bordenkecher to place V-shaped boxes at intervals in the pond, in which the mother fish leaves the spawn and the father fish hatches the young, safely concealed from the humiliatiug gaze of his human kindred. If it were not for these sheltering boxes, the fish culturist declared, the embarrassed fish would throw over his job and hide himself in the deepest spot in the pool. { Even after all he does for them, the father fish seldom sees his numerous offspring grow to fish estate, for by tha time the young fish are old enough to appreciate the paternal care, they are taken from the home nest, distributed among twenty-seven beds, and as soon as their

size permits, sifted out Into big milk cans that hold from 500 to 30.000 fish and shipped to the various lakes in the State to replace the larger fish that will soon fall victims to Indiana's Enthusiastic anglers. SIX KIXDS OF FISH BEIXG PROPAGATED. " At the present time there are six varieties of fish being propagated at the hatchery—red eyes, crappies, blue gills, large and small mouth bass and wall eyed pike, not to count the gold fish and the poor green frogs that are wasting their young lives, to a greater lor less extent, by hanging around the ponds. The gold fish, so Mr. Bordenkecher says, are only used to produce spawn with which to feed the little bass. When the fish culturist was asked what had become of the tender green frogs that formed an interesting part of a rei cent exhibit of fish' from the hatchery, 1 he replied that they were around In i another pond—"what was left of them | after the big bass got through eating ! them." < The larger fish eat the smaller fish, i whenever the notion strikes them and | the small fish is handy, and then the fishermen eat the big fish, so life is sort ! of a hopeless proposition, even for the | most optimistic of the Army tribe.
