Ruins of Roman City Seen by Working Men PARIS, June 12.— Glimpses of a Roman citj r , burled far under ground, but in many details perfectly preserved—tombs, sculptures, column* and entire buildings—were caught by workmen rebuilding the fallen city of Amiens. Scientists and students, their atiention called, grew warm with enthusiasm. “You must excavate farther:” they cried. liut orders were tes build concrete foundations for houses dire.-tty over the mysterious city. And the prospective tenants, roofless since the war, were impatient for homes. The scientists' final plea to have this foundation removed has been filed with the ministry of fine art*.
GIRL TELLS OF DOPE RING IN COURT SESSION Juvenile Judge Hears Weird Story That Drug Peddlers Are Abductors. DENVER, June 12—A Juri<l tale ol bow she was kidnaped by members of a “dope peddling ring," taken to a squalid shack on the outskirts of Denver, starved into submission nnd assaulted was related to juvenile court officials here by a 17-year-old Denver schoolgirl, whose name is being withheld. The girl declared that the “dope ring" gang abducts and holds captive young girls, giving them morphine and cocains in an effort to “create” anew market for their illicit traffic and frequently force their captives on to the street In a life of shame. Juvenile court and welfare officers have investigated the story and verified many details, including the discovery of the shack in which the girl claims to have been held a prisoner for six weeks, a.s well as ol her ‘'dens'’ in Isolated sections of the city. That the shack in which the unidentified girl was mistreated was the headquarters of a “school” to force the use of drugs upon young girls is the belief expressed by welfare officers, and police are investigating the activities of the gang in search of clews to the disappearance of and assaults upon numerous young Denver girls in recent weeks. SHACK IS LOCATED. Juvenile court attaches found the shack in which the grll was held captive in a grove of trees just outside the ! city limits—a small, squat building, with heavily screened windows, and containing two rooms, barren of all furniture except a t rass bed and bed clothing. ! Striped of practically all her clothing, ! the girl told officers, she spent most of ; her time In the bed in an effort to keep | warm. Her meals consisted mostly of sandwiches brought from downtown by members of the gang. She was given i much "dope" and moonshine whisky, she ' said. The girl declared she was captured by I members of the gang In a downtown street, taken to the shack and kept a ; prisoner for six we**ks, during which | time she became a drug addict. ! Tiie girl escaped from her captors by ; jumping through a window of the squalid shack while her captors were all j absent. She reported her terrible experience to juvenile court official*, who j now have her in custody. CAPITALIST IN ULSTER FIGHTS FOR LABORERS Most Trusted Employer in North Ireland Is Thomas Andrews. | BELFAST, JJune 12.—The most trusted I labor man in northern Ireland today is Ia capitalist. lie is Thomas J. Andrews, : bank prisedent, owner of bik linen faetoriee and minister of labor in the Ulster j government. For tlie last four months, in the most difficult conditions that Industrial Ulster has gone through, he has kept the peaca i —a smiling, good-tempered peace—bo--1 tween capital and labor In lister. The Pig financier rather fears him. but tha j unions' leaders go to him for help and j ad\ ice. Ills parliamentary secretary is n hawkeyed joung man named Thomas H. Gordon. one of the most advanced of tha lounger laii.-r men in Ulster —keen, clever, i tar seeing and determined. I “But,” said Gordon to me, “I somei times think that Andrews is the quicki moving person and that X am the Tory, i the brake on the wheel. Andrews doe* not represent labor—he champions it.” j THKOKIKS ! OF GORDON. So I asked this young capitalistic labor ■ minister what he really aimed at. Ha looked very harmless as be sai In his plain office. In his worn blue serge sutt ; he might have been an ordinary clerk had one not noticed his fine head and : quick, alert eyes ! "My sole explanation is.” he said, I "that I was brought up among the workj era. My ancestors have lived in Ulster for three hundred years and have been employers of labor throughout that llmet And the ancestors of a number of my workers worked for my forebears two hundred and fifty years ago. We have never had a labor dispute. All through that time, from one generation to another, we have always been a happy famiiy. “Hero is my theory: It may seem childish to you. But I believe that the employer cannot prosper In the long run unless his workmen are well off and happy. "Bring It down to first principles, I like to know that a man comes to work well fed and happy. Suppose that ha wards a couple of slices of ham and a couple of eggs for his breakfast ;I want him to have it. If times go hard—so hard that he can't afford it—then his deprivation hurts the employer more than, it does the man. ••rf.ai.lv a PARABLE." "This Is really a parable. In Belfast in the past two years we have fallen from a great boom period to one of the deepest depression. Trade has fallen not by degrees but by landslides. Employers liav# been seen themselves thrown from tai prosperity almost into bankruptcy. “Their first notion, naturally, is to reduce wages speedily and largely. That is where I disgree with them. Their future interests are bound up with those of their workmen. And I don't want to see the workmen's good breakfast suddenly reduced. “Let me tell yo uthis: I have in this room daily on an average half a dozen deputations of workers from various nnoins. Not a day passes but what X have several representatives of employers’ associations to see me. I get both sides continuously. ".And I can say this: I have never found tho men anything but absolutely reasonable. When 1 get them here and explain to them what the situation is 1 hava found them prepared to accept it. LABORERS FACE FIREBRANDS. “But, of course, they have to face their firebrands, and if one asks them for concessions one has to otter them something in exchange. “On the other hand, I have never had any difficulty in making employers realize the concessions their men are making, and I think on the whole they have acted generauosly in return. “I believe that within the next two years T'lster will give an object lesson to the world in tins way capital and labor can work band in hand. "Both sides in this bad period must make sacrifices. F.ut so far as I Can sea It the sacrifices will be equal. If w* must give something up I will see that the workmen's breakfast is not reduced too suddenly or without cause. •‘And If the workman suffers the employer must suffer equally at least. Community of this kind must be hte root of our industrial system If we are going to make Ulster the state we aim at.” GOOD NEWS— FOR WHOM? NEW YORK, June 12.— Rentals for three room apartments in an east slda apartment hotel have been reduced from $7,500 to JI.SOOI
