ICE INDUSTRY FULL OF HAZARD The Ice business, contrary to the prevailing opinion is not a set, stable industry devoid of all hazards and risks, but is full of uncertainties, chances and business risks, according to Henry 1.. Dlthmer, president of the Polar Ice and Fuel Company. “To the average citizen, unfamiliar with the technical details of the ice manufacturing business, the making of ice is nothing more than an incident of our modern civilization,’’ Mr. Dithmer said. It represents only a 100-pound or a fiftypound cake of ice in the family refrigerator, and so many coupons taken out of the Ice book. But to any one who has been through a plant such as those maintained by the Polar Ice and Fuel Company, it means a great deal more, for the observer will realize the great amount of machinery and vast amount of skill required to turn out the product. “We believe we have as modern and well-equipped plants as any in Indiana. In our newest one‘we incorporate almost every activity connected with the conduct of the business. For example we maintain our own horseshoeing shop, and do the greater part of our wagon and truck repairs ourselves. In addition to all this, we maintain a cafeteria for the bentlt of our employes. This feature has done a groat deal to I\IM up the morale of our force, as it certainly has been highly appreciated by the indlvidu,. members. "I doubt Tory seriously if any one not thoroughly familiar wit., the details of the ice business realizes Just howmuch of a gamble the business is during the summer months. When the sum mer turns out ot be unusually hot. it 1r Impossible for the plants of Lilianapolls to produce enough ice to supply the demand, and at times they aro hard put to avoid an ice famine of serious proportions. This means a reserve stock must be stored up during the colder months “Right here comes the big element of chance. The reserve simply must be built up. But if an unusually cool summer comes along, we are caught with a c;g reserve on baud aa! no market it. The ice bu'tnoss is peculiar in that re spect. In most lines of Industry it Is possible to predict with a reasonable amount of certainty what the demand >s likely to he for the particular product in question, but this is out of the question In the ice business. The very best we ran do is to prepar- for the greatest posslbremergency and then abide by the results. “I doubt if many persons realize how ranch heat it take' to create a cold. As contradictory as this may seem op the surface, it is fru nevertheless that the manufacture of ice is attended by treme.idous coal consumption." Tire Service a Vital Factor t in Modern Motoring World
ONE OF THE COMPANY'S FLEET OF TROUBLE FIGHTERS.
Did you ever get nut on the road, Mr. Motorist, all dressed up In your best Sunday or party clothes, and then hear the bang of a blown out tire right in the hottest, dustiest, dirtiest road in the world? And then when that happened to you. as of course it has, for blow-outs are cagey old animals and seem to save themselves for exactly the moment which is most Inopportune for the car driver, then you have wished over and over again there was some agency to which you could turn for immediate help and assistance. It is Just such service as this that is supplied by the I.oe Tire Service Company. 37 West Vermont street, according to FT D. Tumble-son, manager of the company, “The leading feature of our biisi?j*ss is the free road service to motorists," Mr. Tuntbleson said. “Wo take groat pride in this. a business concern can have of the success of its merchandising methods and the high quality of its service. Tha fact our business has grown even in excess of our own fondest expectations, and the number of our customers has Increased more rapidly thau we had figured on, is the best kind of proof we have satisfied the pul.lie both as to service and the quality of our tires. "We make it a rule to give transient trade a high degree of care an consideration. Tills is as it should be in the motoring world. Every motorist at some time or other takes long trips, far off the beaten track usually followed by him and far away from hts home and usual business connections. It Is only right this class of trade should be cared for properly and given the service they would get at home. We have paid particular attention to this class of our trade and as a result we have made many friends in widely scattered parts of the country. “Service is particularly valuable in the automobile ind'ustry and in no particular department does this hold true more than with tires. K..r many years tires were soli with little or no attention to the vita! element of service and we made up our minds long ago any motorist who called Circle 3000 would lrarr. wa were in a position to give him courteous treatment and a service he would remember."

LUMBER PRICES MUST INCREASE
That lumber prices have reached about as low a level as may be expected and there is little chance they will decline to the price level of several years ago, is the opinion expressed by O. D. Haskett, president of the O. IF Haskett Lumber Con-many, Twenty-Fifth street and the Lake Erie & Western Railroad. “There has been some disappointment among prospective builders because prices have not come down to the point they expected,” Mr. Haskett said. “But to any one who studies the situation carefully and intelligently it becomes very apparent there are a number of very good reasons why this cannot be. “Lumber is labor plus freight plus timocr, and every year timber grows scarcer. The supply of raw material and natural resources was distributed by nature over a very large part of the continent of North America and existed in sufficient quantity in its original £tate to supply every part of the Nation at its very door. The constant depletion to which our resources have been subjected has resulted In them being restricted to areas which grows more remote year by the jear from the centers of consumption. This consumption is steadily on the lucres se. "The cost of lumber Is the cost of labor plus an increasing cost of freight and the value of materials, which grows increasingly more costly as the supply diminishes. Only two generations ago it was customary to saw aslt and poplar logs In this very State to firewood lengths to be spilt and burned. It was customary to fell the valuable black walnut tree and split It up for rails. No one had to buy shingles for a roof of a farm building, unless the builder wanted to do so for the sake of appearance. Boards which made a fine roof be cut from native oak, while Joists mid sills were made from tree trunks hewed square. Thera was a great sufficiency of timber at hand which a local -.r portable sawmill could cut into various kinds of lumber for building purposes. “Then in those days was the very vital factor of labor, which was far cheaper then. The great difference betwe.-n the cost of lumber then and now is the difference In the quantity of lumber available and the remoteness of the fast diminishing sources of supply. To this must be add. .1 the average haul by rail, or otherwise, between th-* place where the : r.-e gr-w and the place where tlio building is being erected. “Neither propaganda nor legislation Is g.drg to bring lumber back to the old-time low price level until there is reproduced w.-II distributed supply of the raw material Its.of. As long as an Indiana barn is roofed with California shingles It is an Injustice arid a waste of breath to accuse the lumber dealer of being a profiteer. “We are told by the forest service of the Department of Agriculture the country Is using 2*1,1100,<100,000 feet of wood every year and growing *i.0M1.000,000 feet an.l 4,000.000 a -res of cut over land Is added annually to aa area of cut over ar burnt over forest land now amounting to about 300.000.000 acres. As this de strtietiveness proceeds -he cost of the commodity and the cost of freight must reflected In steadily Increasing prices of every forest product."
