! EL PASO. ”'exa, June 5.—A controi|pr*y of .sixty-one years’ standing over war has been settled at Clint, near here, . without any aid from Washington. In fact, the Washington peace conferees knew nothing about the dispute at Clint and the conferees at Clint had but slight inkling of the jamboree at Washington, although both have far reaching effect. The Clint controversy began with the Chi] War and ihe '‘conferees.” both aged women and twins, never separated for more than a few days at a time, could never agree on whether the North or : South was right in that conflict. The ; husband of one served with the Union Army and the husband of the other was : in the Southern Army. The Clint twins are Mrs. Mae Peake and Mrs Bell IJiliings. >o years old. Since birth they have lived together, before : their marriage, while their husbands were ligating during the Cgil War and after- : wards. They got along well together, both say, until this war cam- along, and then they had their first dispute. And while they have always been sisterly and . affectionate, there were tini s when the; 1 almost decided it was best to live apart, and the deaths of tlt* ;r husbands, sixteen and eighteen years ago, failed to end the controversy. The twins were born at Camden. Maine, in January of ISo'J, went to Keo kttk, lowa, in IS-j), and a f-w years abet to Missouri. The family name was Turbo)]. Mae Tarbeil married l)r. W. Peake, a Virginian. Beil Tarbeil mar ried at the same time John Billings Connecticut man. Naturally Virginia and Connecticut could nut see the wa In the same light, so Peake joined tin Southern and Billings the Northeri army, leaving the twins, at home. Th< wives took up their husbands’ cause Mae championing ilie South ;;ud Bell tin North, and they have been- championiug thus for the last sixty-one years. Mrs Peake, the spryer of the two. acted a spokesman and told of the decision to bury the hatchet. “IT t\ VS THIS WAV.” "You see, it was this way,” she explained. “Bell is a mighty sweet giri always has been, and we lived togotiie flue, or did until that horrid war cam aoing. We were both from Maine, bit we stuck to our husbands' States. Be. and l wouldn't be separated from each otter, and yet we would not agree o’i anything tn that war. Only ouee wer we apart, and that was when Bell's bus band was captured. She went to th Southern camp and, although officer ; here tried to get her to come some, sh wouldn't do it without her husband, ant being persistent, she finally got ’ him Well, the war ended and our husband came back, and we all went together tCalifornia, but Bell and I still argue, about the war. That was the only thin we did argue about. Our husbands sal. they wished there never had been air war, if it was going to" result in sue a long quarrel, but what could we do k We’re from Maine, and neither of u would give in. “During the Spanish-American and th World Wars we almost had peace, bu something would always come along t" start the fuss. Then a few days ag. Bell and I were out in the yard niakin a kettle of lard. We always worked to gether. “ 'Bell.* I said, 'I believe we re gettin old.’ 'Yes, Mae,’ she said; T suppos wo are getting along.’ 'How long ag. did this here Civil War begin?’ I asked ■Just tell me that,' and Bell added a rntn ute or two and said; ‘Sixty-one years. ‘Seems to sue that you and I hav. said about all there Is to gay about th war,’ X declared. ‘Doesn’t make any dtt ference If we are from New England Life's too short to worry over somethtu; that happened that long ngo. I want i take things quietly from now on, and N sides the papers say there ain't going t be any more war. If you'll stop and no mention the war again. I'll do the same X think ycu’re part right anyway.’ “Well, Bell looked at me klnda funn; and smiled, and said: ‘Why, Mae, I'vt been wanting to stop talking about tha blamed war all these years, but I Jus: hated to give in. One side was about a. right as the other anyway, and I'll quit if you'll quit. There's nothing In wai anyway.' “.So that’s how it happened, and we're happier than we have been since l&fil, and w don't care anything about the old war now, do we Bell?” and she turned to her twin for confirmation. Bell smiled a wrinkly but kindly smile. “Wo certainly don't,” she 6atd, Ind picked up her sowing. Mrs. Peake has thirteen children ind twenty-six grandchildren, but her sister has no offspring. The family Is as long lived as it is persistent, their mother hav. lng lived to be 103 years old. They trace their ancestry back to the witchcraft day* of Salem. Dr. Peake died eighteen years ago and Billings sixteen year* ago.
