AUTOISTS PROFIT BY SAFEGUARDS Legal Association Protects Interests of Motorists. An organization which has proved rtecid* dl.v popular with automobile owners throughout the country has been the Automobile Legal Association, according to John It. Hope, Indiana manager, 01Merchants Rank building. "The association gives the motorist a service lie never can give himself, and at a reasonable price," Mr. Hope said, in explaining the objects atul workings of the organization. "It was organized in I!H>7 for the purpose of protecting its members from the practice which was then in vogue of country constables making money out of fines assessed against motorists caught in ‘speed traps.’ Through the efforts of the association these traps were abolished, but the work of the association was only Just begun. "Its members now receive free emergency road service in all parts of the t'uited States. Attorney employed by the association give members legal assistance free of charge and the whole weight of the powerful organization is behind its nmrqhers at all times. “This service given by the association attorneys is particularly valuable to traveling motorists, not only because in many instances they have been free ! of charges against them, but because they have been saved long delays in court. For our attorneys make : t a point to advance til.- complaint against a tn mber just as rapidly as possible, thus enabling him in many instances t > Lave court in a few minutes, where if he were mu represented by an association attorney fie might be com’ died to waste valuable time in waiting f*.r his case to be culled. "Members of the association are lik ewise defended in the same territory if -nits are brought against them f..r damage to property. Our experience has shown that many motorists are paying for property damage which they should not pay for legally, They r the imposition in many cases simply because they consider it cheaper to pay than to go to the cxpi use of hiring skilled lawyers to tight the case. This feature of .ejr work alone has saved thousands of dollars f"T our members. "And the test part <■? all of It is that Hie cost of membership lines not exceed that of a good in"al." but a merchandising of a character which permits the home builder to obtain his requirements at a low cost and at the same time give the lumber dealer a modest profit. “Lumber reached its bed rock and bankrupt basis of price approximately fifteen months ago and stayed on the rucks until iwo or three thousand small., nedlttm and larger mill operators were put out of business. Large manufacturers and others of good business Judg incut were hit hard, but were strong enough to pull through and weather the storm. The situation at that time was desperate, but gradually It began to clear. Salaries and wages were cut, es * lleieiicy increased ns a result, and after \ a long and bitter fight they discovered they were losing from to sfi on each thousand feet of lumber sold. "Again they went tit the situation with 1 grim determination and have been get . ting themselves in such shape that with the small Increase In price recently effective they view the future with far greater confidence than ever before. "It is generally agreed among men who know that the present value of lumber is on a conservative basis, with every indication that Ihe level will be maintained for at least some time to come.” MIRRORS FOUND IN MOSES’ TIME Highly Valued for Gift Purposes Since Early Days. SANITARY IDEAS IN SODA STANDS F' intains Show Marked Improvement in Recent Years. Sanitary soda fountains have proved >o popular with the public that no drug tore or confectionery shop of any standing in a community would dare Install one of the old-fashioned, leaky, obsolete affairs so common a few years ago, ac* ording to J. R. Sentney, 222 South Meridian street, local distributer for Walrus fountains and various kinds of sanitary fountain equipment. "I have noticed for years that if the public demands anything with sufficient intensity and persistence it will get it," Mr. Sentney said. "Less than a generation ago the public knew of no soda fountain equipment other than the ornate, crude, unsatisfactory fountains of that day and a type of equipment which would not be permitted by health ot fficials today. These obi fountains were dirty for the very simple reason that no other kind was available. Asa mat ter of fact, they actually constituted in many Instances a menace to public health. “Then cams a period of development and improvement, which 1 believe reached a climax in the development of the Wal rus fountain, the only leak-proof fountain on the market, bo far as I can determine. It has many improvements over other and less scientifically de signed makes One example is the fact that all plumbing is conn' teed when the uritain is delivered, which makes it ununecessary to hire a plumber to make the connect inns, as usually 1s the case. This saves the purchaser tt lot of money In some Instances and assures htin of having the work done hv tho highest grade of experts “Another • plendi.l and effective feature Is that the drain board of the Walrus is in one piece, which makes It Impossible for dirt to collect in any cracks, for the simple reason that there are no cracks The board is built like a cord tire, constructed of layer upon layer of material cemented together In such a way ns to make It leak-proof and not subject to warping. "The fountain has SO per cent more refrigeration than usually is f* und atul a minimum of ice is required t.j keep it cold. The sliding doors are far more 1 convenient than the obi style ou the ice cream compartments This docs away with the time-losing in ■ thod of lifting ami replacing a ibi ev-ry tima dipper of Le er-atu is taken out. This fcatur- is pat<*:,led. '■Sanitary Ideas have made rapid strides in recent years For years 1 have handled cup*, towels, spoons and napkins made of paper At first tin d'-ninmi L r tb.-a* articles was limited urn! dealers had to be Bubje'tt 1 to n gr.-at d* il of missionary work before they w-tild try them out. Now the demand t.ns grown to a point where it is hard to meet The prediction that paper equipment never would take w.'h Ihp public has been proved false over and over." HOW TO lIFIAT LANDLORD*. HANDSOME LAMPS LIGHT DRIVEWAY Parkway Enhanced by Lighting Standards. F.urdsnl Parkway, the gateway to Riverside Park lias been termed the most brilliantly lighted driveway in Indianapolis, according to officials of the Merchants Ileat and Light Company. In speaking of this one of tho officials of the company said: “The term is well deserved. More than a mile of Wisconsin red granite lighting standards, an innovation in this part of the country, afford a fiuod of light for the driveway. These standards form a double row from the w’est end of the parkway extending to Riverside Park a mile west of the starting point. “There is no question but that the new posts greatly enhance the beauty of the drive. Bushes and shrubbery have been tastefully set out at the base of each pest, thereby removing the cold bareness of a single light. These stands number one hundred and eight and are thirteen feet in height, three feet higher than the ordinary post in use in Indianapolis. The lamps used are -lot) candlepower, which is more than double the average candlepower of lamps used in the regular lighting posts. "By this new arrangement of lighting Burdsal parkway which is one of the main entrances to Riverside Park and is being used more and more every day, one of the most beautiful boulevards in the city has been made possible and has to a great degree added to the beauty of the park Itself. The Merchants Heat and Light Company supplies all street lighting for the city of Indianapolis.
