BOOZE TRAFFIC AT CLINTON TO GET ATTENTION Federal Officers to Make Further Probe Into Conditions. Fnrfher Investigations Into the liquor traffic at Clinton undoubtedly will be made by Federal officials following testimony given during the trial of the Clinton liquor conspiracy cases. Involving twenty defendants, before Judce Albert B. Anderson In Federal Court. It Is rot believed a special session of the grand Jury will be callued. but Indications are the conduct of •'higher nps” of Vermillion County will be Investigated and taken up at the next session of the grand jury. Final disposition of the cases of eight defendants who were found guilty by a jury In Federal Court Thursday and of live defendants who entered pleas of guilty will be taken by Judge Anderson June 23. The decision to defir action in these erscs was made Immediately after the jury reported its verdict of guilty. Verdicts of guilty were returned against Paulo Sauindo, sister of Janies “Big Jim" Carero, generally recognized as the head of the liquor ring of Ciinton: Morris Cochrane an I John Burnett, of Indianapolis, and Martin Mohair, John basso t Peter Savio, John Beetto and Anton Peanasso of Clinton. pleas of g .ilty were entered by Carero. Fred Hatfield. Patrick Butler, Bill Davis and William D. Smith, the last four of Indianapolis. Five il< fondants. Clarence Schultz. Homer Stocks, Addie Hicks, Floyd Kriner and dim* Craig, all of Indianapolis, also entered pleas of guilty, but no action will bo taken in their cases until they have completed sentences at the Indiana State Farm Imposed on them in the State court? The remaining two defendants are fugitives from Justice. During the trial, testimony was given to the effect that city officials of Clinton closed their eyes to the enormous liqu r traffic being carried on openly.*that whole truck loads of white inuie were loaded in broad day light and that 'here v is little attempt nt concealment of any of the transaction. Wilson’s home and front yard, which is fenced with pickets, is located In the lowlands near the river. The other day the river began rising, and Wilson, having a couple of head of cattle In sis yard, opened his front gate to let the cattle out so that they could go to the hills. The river came up and filled Wilson’s yard. Thoughtlessly, while riding in his yard in a small boat, Wilson noticed the gate open and closed It. When the river went down the next day or so Wilson found that he had sevi ral hundred pounds of buffalo fish j in his yard. They had come in the yard ■ when he opened the gate, but could not j get out through Ihe fence with the gate closed.
