COAL FIELDS PLAN MERGER OF INTEREST PITTSBURGH. Pa.. June 2.—Plans are well under way for the merger of $40,000,|OOO wcrth of coal properties along the r“Pan Handle" railroad between Pittsburgh and the West Virginia line, it was admitted today by John A. Bell, Pittaburgh banker, who Is one of the Important figures in the deal. Between fifteen and twenty concerns of varying sizes are Involved, Mr. Bell said, but the exact number is yet undetermined, negotiations being under way with several which have not yet come within the fold. Argument Over Horse Has Serious Results MUNCIE. Ind., June 2—Benjamin Hartman, factory employe, Is in a critical condition at a local hospital and police arc searching for Gluck Holeman. alleged to have struck him with a club late Thursday night, following an argument over a horse. Hartman suffered a fractured skull and his recovery la doubtful. Leaps to Death Out of Hospital Window BEAUMONT, Texas, June 2—R. L. Maxson, 50. who killed his son, Lorain, 16. and attempted to take his own life after Mrs. Maxson brought divorce action. overpowered guards at a hospital today and leaped four stories to hl3 death. Tariff Sidetracked for Army Supply Bill * WASHINGTON, June 2.—Under a unanimous consent agreement the Sonar* today sidetracked the McCumber tariff bill to take np the 1922-23 Army supply bill, carrying appropriations to provide for an enlisted personnel of 133,000 men during the next fiscal year. Second Attempt at Suicide Proves Fatal MUNCIE. Ind.. June 2.—Despondent over family troubles. Mrs. Amelia Small, 23 attempted suicide early this morning by taking several grains of a slow poison. Physicians say she cannot recover. She made a similar attempt a few months ago. Chicago Car Fares Reduced 1 Cent CHICAGO, June 2.—Fare on Chicago surface lines was o-dered cut by the United States District Court today from S to 7 cents, effective June 15. Transfers Issued from now until th& new rate goes Into effect will be cashed In for 1 cent each.

Four Local Men to Attend Conference Four members of the city plan commission, Lawrence V. Sheridan, executive secretary, and J. Clyde Hoffman, attorney, will leave Saturday and Sunday tort Springfield, Mass., where they will attend the national city planning, conference, June 3, 0 and 7. Progress on the Indianapolis city plan will tu* reported to the experts, who will gather from all parts of the country. The commissioners who will make the trip are: President, Edward B. Kaub; Thomas C. Howe, Ix*uts W. Bruek and Lloyd D. Claycombe. En route Mr. Sheridan will stop at Rochester, N. Y., to observe the park system. He probably will spend some time In New York City, Boston mid Philadelphia studying progress of city planning on his way back. CREDITORS FILE SUIT. A creditors' was filed aga.iist Henry C. Smith of Marlon In Federal Court today by Wilbur J. Evans, Roy W. Pontzlous and William C. Bales, all of the same city. The petition avers that Smith owe* debts amounting to $23,732.31.

NEW SWIMMING POOL PLANNED Board Receives Bids for Rhodius Park Improvements. The hoard of park commissioners today has under consideration bids for the construction of the swimming pool and locker house at Rhodius Park. It is expected construction will be under way before the end of the summer. Bids were as follows: States Construction Company, $90,976; William P. Jnngclaus Company, $110,900; Karstedt Construction Company, $115,450: John Schumacher Company, $117,500, and R. H. Scott, $80,064.3ft.' The Scott bid provided for a deduction of $3,000 if another contractor Installs lighting fixtures. Bids also were received for lighting, plumbing and heating equipment and installation. All action was rescinded upon a resolution for the resurfacing of Meridian street from Twenty-Sixth to TwentyEighth streets, and the engineering department instructed to repair the pavement ns well as possible. Bills were received for resurfacing Capitol avenue from Sixteenth street to Fall Creek.

3 East Tenth Street Homes Are Entered A thief today entered and robbed three East Tenth street homes. Mrs. Henry Dendron, 2522 East Tenth street, said $1.25 was taken at her home: Henry Marosky, 2524 East Tenth street, reported $4 stiffen from his residence; J. W. Venable, 2529 East Tenth street, said $2.56 was missing at his house. In each case the thief sneaked into the house through a rear door. The police obtained a description of the thief. Judge Gives Life Sentence at Hard Work to Graduates Fourteen students of Indiana University were given life sentences at hard labor by Judge Albert 11. Anderson in federal Court. At least, that Is what Mark Storen United States marshal said when fourteen members of the graduating class of the department of the law of Indiana University, were admitted to practice by Judge Anderson.
