‘lt's Fxcellerit Day for Suicides[ GLOOMY H EATHER TURNS THOUGHTS TO DEATH Climate Affects Life’s Complexes
by sora Sat. “It's a line <lay f>ir suicides,” remarked .1 veteran policeman as he noted the chill gloom and dampness that ushered in the month of June so inauspielously. For, according to the officer who has answered many a suicide call in his years of service, there is something about a dark rainy day that tends to mkae one count his troubles instead of his blessings. If the day stays gloomy Jong enough and tl>? troubles seem dsicouraging enough, the troubled one will reach the state of mind where he doesn't et.ro what happens and seek the uiiiokest wav out so his troubles. The coroner's records seem to prove the correctness of the bad weather theory, too, for during the lasi year they show that of the fifty-five suicides that c ecu red in Marion County, the greatest number._eight, took place in December, a month during which the weather was generally gloomy. But no one during that month was tempted to end his life by jumping into Fall C-eek. which is a favorite method during the warmer months. February. March, September and November follow close upon December as preferred months for suicides, and during all of these months the weather was more or less rainy and depressing. Coroner Paul F Robinson is also a firm believer in the theory that it is not the heat that drives persons to suicide, as is the popular belief, hut the rain. “And It isn't only the persons who kill themselves that are affected by the weather.' said the coroner. "Just take a week of gloom and clouds and weather inch as wo are having and nearly erery- : body you me-t will be showing signs of depression and feeling life is n. hopeless sort of proposition. In many coses, however, we never learn the real motives behind the deled.” Several cases on last year's records were persons who were Inmates of some Institution, where they had been confined after showing signs of mental unbalance, which accounts for their act, according to W. POLK’S MILK $T% cents a I quart Good milk is not only the most perfect food but the most economical. Because it is a liquid it is difficult for the average person to appreciate that all the essential elements required in food are in milk in the proper proportion. There are men in Indianapolis who for months have taken absolutely, no other food than Polk’s milk and have gained many pounds in weight. The cost of the actual food in Polk’s milk is less than in the so-called solid foods and in addition is the most healthful food known. Polk’s milk is safe guarded by every device known to science and by every effort of a great watchful organization, and costs no more than ordinary milk. one who doesn't return your love, but prefers to love someone else. There's an awful lot of jealous people in the world who would rather kill themselves than let any one else have the one they love. A good many times they kill the other two people in the triangle, too, and chen kill themselves. I tell you, love 13 a bad business. It makes lots
and lots of trouble in the world,” he philosophized. “You just take my advice and don't ever fall In love,” he told his questioner, “but if you must fall, don't fall hard enough to get hurt.” Whatever the reason, the coroner's figures prove almost twice as many men as women were affected by suicidal desires last year.
