Suggests Radio Club as Best Means for Amateur to Hear Concerts. BY PAUL F. GODLEY. America's Foremost Radio Authority. ! “What can I do to get myself rigged up for the reception of radiophone concerts?” Judging by the thousands of letters I get from radio fans the country over, this Is a question that is bothering many. There is no end of advice as to “what to do.” Borne of It is first rate; much of it Is bad. The novice has no way of selecting the good from the bad. My suggestion Is: "Join a radio club. If there Is none in your vicinity form one.” Most of the cities and towns in this country already have such clubs formed around a nucleus of experienced amateur operators. These men—or boys —have learned by experience Just what may be expected from given types of equipment. They have been trained In a thorough school. Help to Novloes. The ridiculous claims made for many types of radio sets cause them to smile. They are the men to guide the novice

during the period of uncertainty when the thoughts uppermost In hU mind are: “What shall I buy? How much shall I pay? And how far will It be possible for me to hear?” And there Is another thing that the novice will learn In this radio club. It Is this: The most fascinating thing about amateur radio Is the ability for some amateur to communicate across several States with another, or for an amateur on the Atlantic teurs messages to friends who live on the Pacific. The radio telephone will never take the place of the radio telegraph as a method of amateur communication for two very good reasons. First, there Is no fascination in attempting to communicate long distances by the radio telephone. Secondly, to communicate over a given distance the radio telephone will require about twice ai much power as the radio telegraph. Radlo Reserve, Men trained In the use of radio telegraph equipment are a great bulwark to the Nation In times of National peril. A large percentage of radio telephone fans will find a very natural inclination toward this means of communication.
