Radiophone Is Still in Its Infancy, Is Opinion of Engineer. BY DAVID SABNOFF. General Manager Radia Corporation of America. i To those of us who watched every step In the onward march of radio, who saw scientific principles shaping themselves into business facts, vho sensed the trend < f research in the development of wireless, the instantaneous success of radiophone broadcasting does not come as a surprise. In 1915, fr*>m the possibilities that could bo foreseen I had worked out a plan for radio broadcasting In commercial detail and submitted it for consideration by my company. The time was not ripe, however, for action on this project; we were in the midst of war activities and the devices for radiophone transmission and reception had not been perfected to the point they have been brought to at the present day. Broadcasting is a reality now, and it has been made possible only by fine coordinated effort within tne industry, a large part of the ciedit being due to the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company for being first in establishing it on an organized basis. The hearth-side circle is only a small part of the unmeasured sphere of its influence, however. Country schools can not afford to employ the best teachers or the most able lecturers. Think of a system of rural education, augmented through the setting up of a broadcasting station with a range of several hundred miles and connecting up within that radius a thousand country schools. Appraise the benefit cf having one skilled lecturer In history or geography, or hygiene, or what. -er the subjc.-t may be. deliver his lesson as the children listen In their schoolrooms, possibly with the Intel.persing of appropriate items of entertainment and music r : hold the children's Interest. And w-hat may we expect when the telephone reaches across the ocean? I p to the present time there has been no way for trans-oceanic transmission of the human voice, because the cables lying on the bottom of the ocean are not suitable for speech transmission. They can carry feeble currents for telegrap' but not fur telephony, because of the distortion of the speech, and other technical reasons. But with the radio telephone, it may be predicted that within the next few years, and possibly sooner, we shall be talking across the Atlantic Ocean. It will be possible then for a man in New York to pick up his ordinary wire telephone, secure connection with the radio telephone station which will carry his voice across the ocean and conect up with h;s partner or business associate on the other side. Trans-oceanic radio telephony is not a theory; it is an accomplished fact. Speech was first transmitted to France by the American Telephone and Teh graph Company; ar.d even a greater distance was covered by its engineers when their equipment at the Arlington Naval Station, near Washington, enabled speech to be heard in Hawaii. This company and the associated engineers of the Western Electric Company have attained very practical results in their experimental work in the ship to shore field enabling me a few evenings ago to talk from my home, over the ordinary wire, to the captain of the steamship “America,” 400 miles out at sea. The highly developed ship radio telephone transmitter on the “America” was due to the General Electric Company. Many Plan for Radio as Part of Camp Equipment
By I’AUL F. COBLEV. Many campers this summer will take radio outfits as part of tiieir camp equipment. They will bo wist- in so doing. for I can imagine no place where a radio will be more desired. Particularly durhig the occasional Inclement weather which is bound to come during a vacation period. During these spells, nature's electrical interference may sometimes prevent the satisfactory reception of signals. But the interference will only be temporary. During the rest of the time the camper will be able to get the weather forecasts, time signals, baseball scores and other broadcasted material. Due to tae nature of the terrain, the erection of the antenna frequently offers serious difficulties, particularly if it Is necessary to receive the radio reports from a great distance. KITE AE.KI VL. If trees of fair height a _ o available, they may serve ns antenna supports. But if they are not. kites may be used for holding the antenna wire aloft. At the seashore, on the lakes or In the- mountains, there Is seldom a time when a breeze of some kind is not blowing, and there is a kite for every breeze. I have known many amateurs who have found no end of pleasure in selecting two or three kites, each of different size. These are of the "tailless'' variety, sometimes known as “eddy” kites. 1 have purchased them In any number of toy shops or stationery stores at prices ranging from five cents to a quarter each. A light breeze calls for a kite “string" consisting of No. 2S bare copper wire,

while the heaviest wind may call for something considerably stronger, for example. No. IS bare copper wire. A little experiment with the breeze, the kite tor kites, for these may be flown very handily in tandem) and the wire, will soon enable one to run up an antenna with a surprising minimum of delay. Antennae such as these have been kept aloft for periods of several days, although the best practice is to reel in the 2°o or more feet of wire as soon as It has served its purpose. GOOD KECEPTIOIN. Antennae supported by kites hare been very successful for the reception of signals from European hlghpow r and seml-bigh-power stations. Under those circumstances, as much as 1,000 or more feet of wire may be fen up into the sky. With an antenna of such excellent characteristics as to height, surprisingly strong signals may lie received with even tlie simpler types of vacuum tube receivers. Ground connection may be made by stri Telling a wire ."on feet long over tlie surface of the earth In a direction away from the station which it is desired to receive. GOLD RATH FATAL. Novel Mouthpiece
The operator at the new "aerial lighthouse” at College Point, N. Y., wears the most novel radiophone headgear in existence. Not only are the earpieces encased in loath, for sound efficiency, but the transmitter is attached to the throat by a band around the neck. This “mouthpiece” picks up the vibrations of the vocal cords through the muscle and membrane of the throat.

Brown’s day was heavy and dull. He lacked “pep.” There was a mid-afternoon drowsy spell when he needed to be awake—the direct and natural result of heavy, starchy breakfasts and lunches, taken on faith and without question as to value—just because the food looked and tasted like food. Thousands of shrewd business men Who count their change, take their food for granted. That’s what builds up the sanitarium business, and puts the tired “all-done” feeling into the mid-afternoon of a business day.
