It is admitted the Valentino case may prove a means of obtaining a definite decision that California barristers have long wanted, as It Is said to be the first complaint Involving an international marriage in this State. The point the higher courts will be asked to adjudicate Is whether or not It Is legal for a person to marry nnder the laws of another country before having received a final divoce l decree from a previous mariage in this ' States and then come within the bounds of Callfonia and reside with their latest mate. ‘Mistress Mary * Should See Health Show Garden
BT NORA KAY. Mistress Mary of the old nursery rhyme conld never have been called ‘'contrary” if her garden had produced such pleasing results as does the miniature schodl garden which la a part of the health show’s exhibit of work done In the Indianapolis public schools. Expressions of admiration are heard from amateur gardeners both old and young, at the sight of the neatbeds of tiny turnips, slim onions and pale green lettuce, guarded on either side by tall, though youthful beans and artistic rows of peas, while In the diminutive cold frames tender young tomato plants live In snug seclusion until danger of frost la past. Even the old fashioned rose bushes grow beside the trim picket fence, and a tiny bird house Invites feathered assistants to help keep down the greedy bugs and wormfc. Another of tfle school exhibits that call* forth favorable comment from the older visitors Is that which shows the work of the grade school sewing classos. Here are shown the carefully made layettes made by the Junior Red Cross for overseas babies, practical school frocks which the girls have made for themselves and dainty lingerie beautifully ornamented with handwork. Correct diet for the school child Is shown In two contrasting types of food, the proper and Improper. On the first list are milk made foods, eggs, spinach and other healthful vegetables; on the second, big greasy doughnuts, coffee, pies—even though they might be mother's best —pickles and other articles tending to give any tender stomach an unet.sy night MILK DRINKING IS EMPHASIZED. To emphasize the importance of milk drinking, a sturdy-looking doll occupies one of the school booths, holding In one hand bottle half filled with milk and In the other a glass Into which she pours the milk from the bottle. Then, with one Ukelife motion, she lifts the glass, drinks the milk and, to the amazement of the onlookers, back It comes Into the bottle. "No wnoder abe can afford to drink ninety-nine quarts a day!” remarked one astonished bystander. Just across from the school exhibit the Nature Study Club has an Interesting booth of stuffed birds, and many a boy as well as the girls may be seen stealthily stroking the flerce-looklng owls or punching the pelican's big beak to see If Real, live models are featured In the | Indiana Dental Society’s exhibit, where i the children drop In to watch and rej main, with Spartan fortitude, to have | the white-clad young dentists give their teeth an examination and point out their defects. "PICKLED” BRAINS ATTRACT COMMENT. “Do you suppose our brains will ever look hs queer as these?” Inquired one youthful observer to another at the sight of the jars of "pickled” brains that one of the hospitals show In tly;ir exhibit. The older of the two read the label, “al- ! coholic brain” thoughtfully and then ob- , served, “Nope, not unless the price of 1 drinks come down.” Attractive nurses In crisply starched j uniforms of blue and white add to tho atI tractiveness of the model hospital rooms, ! one shown for patients, the other is a : model room for nurses in training. The | feminine visitors at the show also are ' attracted by the doll display showing tho ; uniforms of the various schools of nursj ing throughout the State. For the masculine minds there is the Army display of equipment used by the ; Army medical corps—everything from the i mysterious looking brown bag which, as j the oflk-r in charge explained. was called a ‘Lister” bag and was used to hold water so that it could be purified if there was any question of 11s fitness for drinking purposes, to the new airplane ambulance In which wounded soldiers .an be carried with both swiftness and ease to a place where they can be given treatment The water in the "Lister” bag, it seems, is brought into the class with the Indianapolis supply by the simple method of emptying the contents of a j tiny vial of chlorinated lime Into the bagful of water, allowing it to stand for

twenty minutes, and the results, said the officer, are satisfactory, both from a of taste and of purity. Then, there were the little tubes of typhoid vaccine and of pneumonia vaccine, by which the soldiers are given enough of the diseases to be rendered Immune to them, with tubes of green liquid and red liquid and lavender liquid both useful and ornamental. And rhe most fearful collection of knives and scissors and probes, which, said the officer, were only the field outfit and never used if they could possibly bring the patient into where tho regular set of instruments could be used. After one look at the field array, however, one iOlooker observed that if the regular ones were any worse than those, ho hoped never to have them used on him. The entire Army display seems moro or less painfully familiar to the men who have been In service, and none of them sesms Inclined to linger too lovingly over the vaccine tubes.
