HIGHER PRICES FORECAST BY GEORGE BRYANT Government Agent Says Reduced Acreage Means Shorter Crops. Higher prices for com and oats In Indiana ■were lorecast today by George C. Bryant, representative of the Department o_’ Agrcnlture here today. A short acreage and a consequent small crop of both these products will force a higher market, Bryant said. Farm work has been delayed by the wet condition of the soil. •‘This won’t make any material difference to the farmer in the amount of ir nney he receive*, however,” Bryant said. “But it will make a big difference to the consumer. “The total amount of money the farmer receives for a small crop will be virtually the same as that he receives for a large crop when prices are low.” Corn is Indiana’s principle crop. Oats coming next ranks almost evenly with xcheat and hay. The corn acreage in Indiana is approximately 5.000,000, Bryant said. Wheat, oats and hay are about 2,000,000 acres each. **ln the south part of the State the farmers won't be able to get Into the bottom lands for another week yet,” he declared. “In nearly every section, the i trmer considers May 10 as the final date for getting in his corn. “In southern Indiana it should have been in the ground two weeks ago. The effects of that can possibly be overcome to some degree by planting early maturing varieties of corn. And 1f the frost bolds off late enough In the fall, the crops will be helped.” Oats was seeded two or three weeks later than ustiaT and in some counties it h is not yet been sown.” LEGION WOULD WATCH GRAVES OF VETERANS Would Make One Memorial Day Answer for North and South. A proposal that the American Legion be allowed to astnime the trust of caring for the craves of Confederate and Union soldiers has been made to the United C 'nfederate Veterans and the Grand Army of the Republic, national headquarters of the World War service men here announces. The legion asks that It be given the privilege, beginning with the ccm'.ng Memorial Pay. It suggests that, to mark ttie occasion, legion posts and units of the Confederate and Grand Army organlratlons exchange their respective flags over the graves. •*We see your ranks growing very thin and while there are a few of yon yet

with the living, the legion has an ambition to prove Its fidelity to you by accepting as a sacred trust the privilege of caring for and decorating all of the graves of America’s heroic dead, who fought on both sides In that struggle which resulted In a rebirth of our Nation,” reads the legion’s letter to Gen. J'ulian S. Carr, chief of the Confederate veterans. “Why not let ns hare Just one national Memorial Day for the decoration of America's soldiers?” the letter continues. “Our membership is comprised of the sons and, largely, grandsons of Confederate veterans and Union veterans. If is composed of your children and your children's children; we belong to you and you belong to us. The glory and heroism that you wrought is our priceless heritage.” Legion officials here declare their belief that gradually May 30 is becoming Memorial Day in both the North and the South, where before States of the confederacy 'nave traditionally observed different dates than those observed in the North. It Is hoped that through the Influence of World War veterans on both sides of Mason-Dixon line, Memorial Day this year will be one of Nationwide significance. FARM BOYS* RISE. MALDON. HEAVY BEAMS USED TO DRAG INDIANA ROADS Steel Secured by Commission From Government Serves Purpose. Thousands of pounds of steel eyebeams designed and sold to the Government for various purposes when this Nation was In war, are now doing peacetime duty on Indiana State roads Having been fashioned into admirable drags fqr leveling and scraping secondary roads. According to members of the State' high highway commission a considerable portion of this steel consigned to the Indiana highway department by the federal Government, has been faslboned into drags that are excellent for maintaining gravel and stone surfaced throughfares. The secondary roads are dragged three and four times each week, especially afteT a rainfall. The heavy steel keeps the surface level and free of loose macadam or gravel. These lmprovished drags were planned by A. H. Hinkle, chief engineer of maintenance. They are doing the work to better advantage than the commercial made drags. The cost is infinitesimal, highway officials say.
