STATE HIGHWAYS RESPONDING TO MAINTENANCE Secondary Roads Show Results of Attention, Say Motorists. Secondary roads In the Indiana highway system are rapidly responding to con tinned maintenance and in many sections of the States pleasure motorists say they Ureter them to rigid type roads. This statement was made by members of the State highway commission following a tonr of fourteen State roads In northern and western Indiana. The commission plans an inspection of secondary and primary roads in other parts of the State within the next few days. On these trips highway officials not only view the condition of State roads and work that is in progress, but get in personal touch with the public served to determine how the State roads are solving the traffic problems of the specific localities. On a recent tour the commission followed State road 31 from Danville to Montaanma; road 10 to Covington; 33 to Attica; 9 to near Kentland; 7 and 8 to near Wheatfield in Porter County; 60 to North Jndson; 15 to Knox; 44 to Plymouth; 1 (Range Line) to South Bend; 2' (Lincoln Highway) throngh Elkhart to Goshen and about half way to Ft. Wayne. The return was via 27 through Warsaw, North Manchester and Silver Lake, thence on 7 to Peru and from Peru to Indianapolis over the Range Line highway. From Ligonier to Ft. Wayne the State highway department has practically re-t-ullt with gravel a section |>f more than thirty miles of the Lincoln Highway. The maintenance division now has this road hi such shape it can Truthfully be compared to a boulevard, highway officials say. According to citizens of Ft. Wayne ; and Ligonier, parts of this road last. winter were impassable, due' to chuck: holes and ruts where practically all metal had worn away. The commission has assured, the people of that part of the State that this section will be kept open to traffic this winter and In fact at all times until it is possible to pave it with rigid type surface. In the 540-mile trip on State roads highway officials say they found only I a flew bad places. These secondary roads
