33 MILLIONS OF DOLLARS SPENT T N ROADWORK inures Compiled by Indiana Motor Transport and Highway Commission. Indiana spent $:>3,000,000 for highways In 1021. Os this, the counties spent $8,000,000 ... roa dtai funds and $17,000,000 of road bonds. ” The State highway department spent f'.000.000 for building bridges, constructing roads and maintenance of 3,300 miles (•f highway. These figures were announced by a niemtK-r of the Indiana Motor Transport today. They were compiled from statistics from the highway commission reports and statistics from the counties. The county figures are particularly conservative, the members said. The figures quoted do not include expenditures of four of the large and prosperous counties, which undoubtedly spent $3,000,000 or more In tax funds and Incomes from bond issues during 1021. A vast portion of the total of $33,000.000 went into gravel, 6tone and other highways, atnl for construction and maintenance. To date, the State highway system has less than three hundred miles of permanent hard-surfaced roads. There are also about 33.000 miles of improved county roads and only 1,000 are hard surfaced. Indiana, including counties, spends much more money than nearby States, it was said. It has less than one-fourth ? the mileage of hard-surfaced roads in its State system compared to Illinois or Ohio.
