PROPOSAL TO MOVE NEGROES CAUSES STORM Citizens Express Indignation to Board of Public Safety. ■Residents of the north central part of the city have raised such objections to the quartering of a negro Ore company in the Maple Road fire station, which Mayor Shank has announced Is contemplated, that the hoard of public safety gave out assurance today the step. If taken at all# will not be taken immediately. Mayor Shank said the negro company now on duty at the fire station at Sixteenth street and Ashland avenue will b moved either to the Maple Road station or the engine house at Indiana avenu® and the canal. The latter Is in the negro quarter. The former is in the midst of a white residential neighborhood. The Sixteenth street and Ashland avenue house is to be turned Into a repair shop for the tiro department. Harry E. Calland, president of th® Mapleton Civic Association said he would call a meeting of officers Immediately to lay plans to oppose vigorously removal of the colored firemen to Maple Road. City officials received calls from a number of citizens who expressed indignation. Sumner Clancy, president of the Northeastern Civic League, which includes territory near the Maple Road engine hous® said ho was not interested. James E. Armttage, Democratic member of the board of public safety, said the board has not decided to send th® firemen to Maple Road. ‘•The board with Mayor Shank has only considered moving them to this place.” he said. ‘‘We do not plan to do anything immediately. We intend to wait until Fire Chief John O'Brien returns from a convention he is attending at Atlantic City. We will take the matter up with him and get his recommendation. The public can trust the board to put the firemen where they will be moat efficient and where they belong.” One official said he had heard some citizens were saying William H. Armitage, political marshal of the city hall forces, had told Mayor Shank to put the negroes on Maple Road. Members of the board of safety indiginantly denied this.
NEW EFFORT TO BRING PEACE TO IRISH FACTIONS DUBLIN, May 11—Another effort t* bring peace to troubled Ireland wai launched today by the Irish peace committee, which had reported to the Dali Eireann it was unible to find a basis for a permanent truce between the Fre® State and republican armies. In the meantime the armistice will b® extended. Mrs. Thomas Clarke, a member of the committee, is understood to have been mainly responsible for the new efforts of the organization after It admitted failure. It is unofficially reported that army officers are seeking anew agreement with the Dail.
