The former record of 107 feet 5>4 inches was made by James C. Lincoln of the New’ York A. C., in New York in 1920. The new high jumping record fell to the honor of Lloyd Osborne, also of Illinois, who cleared tbe bar at six feet six inches In the running high jump, a height never before reached In Intercollegiate competition, according to Knuto Rockne of Notre Dame, referee. After bagging the lion’s share of the honor*, the Illinois team also set anew record for the Drake quarter-mile relay, winning in 3:20 2-5. The former record was 3:212 5. Lew Tendler Saves Hands for Use on Leonard’s Jaw NEW YORK, May 1. —Body punching, a, .ording to a man close to the Giassm', menage in Philadelphia, has been taken up hy Lew tendler. almost to the j excision of all other manner of attack ito save those worthy brittle hands so they mar be used to better effect on Benny Leonard's jawn Tendler has taken part in a number of h ts in this vicinity recently on an two o- asions at least he was accusal of having hit opponents low. These Incidents are mentioned because they seem to bear out the contention that the left-handed gentleman from Philadelphia has been forced to alter his style of fighting. However, It Is difficult to Imagine a challenger trying to beat Leonard down : with a body* attack. This would mean I that Tendler would have to play a rnsh- ! ing game to get inside of Leonard’s rapier left auid the man attempting that is Ukelv to have a head left on his shoulders at the end of six rounds, juat as Charley Paddock is likely to run down by a steam roller. We are, of course, assuming that Tendler and Leonard will meet, ultimately. Right now the bout Is being smoked up with rare finesse, what with one word leading to another, and the doubt always In the air as to whether Leonard could dispose of this persistent young man with the same facility with which he tells you about It. New World Record Among Features of Penna Relay Games PHILADELPHIA, May I.—Racing to victory In the world’s record time of 7 minutes 49 2-5 seconds, the University of Pennsylvania two-mile relay team cap* tured chief honors on Franklin field Saturday in the twen-eighth annual relay carnnoval of its own institution. While Pennsylvania with its record* breaking team stood foremost in the limelight, Cornell, Syracuse and Georgetown won relay titular places of prominence, and Earl Thomson of Dartmouth, Afred Leconey of Lafayette, Ralph Hills of Princeton, Murphy of Notre Dame and Leroy Brown of Dartmouth captured chief honors in the individual events. The new world’s record was established by the Pennsylvania quartette consisting of George Meredith, E. McMullin, J. Hanlon und L. Brown, and supplanted by a full second the time of the famous Ox-ford-Cambridge University combination. The one-mile championship race, won by Syracuse, also developed into a hairraising contest. From start to finish it was a battle between Syracuse and Princeton. Cornell captured the four-mile titular event, her sterling milers, Stickler, Carter, R. Brown and N. Brown, leading at the end of each mile. Georgetown uncovered a fine combination of 220-yard m#e in the half-mile relay and won handily over Ohio State and Pennsylvania. Earl Thomson, the Olympic star running his last big meet for Dartmouth, proved that he had lost none of his speed by capturing the 120-yard hurdle race run on turf from a classy field of hurdlers in fifteen seconds fiat, thus equaling • the time made by Ralph Simpson of Missouri University at Franklin Field in 1916. A few minutes later he went out for the discus throw and hurled the plattor 131 feet 3Va Inches for another firstplace medal. Ralph Hills, who occupied the position of youngest member of the American Olympic team in 1920, xvon the shot put with a distance of 46 feet 5 inches. Murphy of Notre Dame and Lerov Brown of Dartmouth outjuinped all competitors In the high jump. They tossed a coin for first place when the bar stood at 6 feet 2 inches, Murphy taking the first prize xvith a lucky call. Two Pennsylvania field stars took the running broad jump and the javelin throw when Rose leaped 23 feet 4®i inches and Brounder sent the spear out 187 feet 11 inches for anew Penn carnival record. Yale scored a first when Gardner shot over the pole vault bar at 12 feet 9 Inches, aud Leconey of Lafayette proved himself to be the fastest of a very fast field of Bprlnters by defeating Lovejoy, Cornell and Graeb, Columbia, in the final of the 100 yards in 9 4-5 seconds, equaling the carnival time made by Arthur Duffy, Georgetown, twenty years ago. - Busy Day at Butler for Baseball and Tennis Men With the baseball team meeting Muncie Normal at Muncla and the tennis team playing Wabash at Irwin field, today was a busy session for the Butler College athletic retainers. Little Is known of the strength of the Muncle ball outfit, but the general consensi sos opinion was that the locals would annex a victory. Staton pitched Friday against De Pauw and It was unlikely that he would be used against Griggs. Slaughter or Glasscock were available for duty and It was probable that ono of them would be selected for duy. The Wabash tennis meet got under way at 10 o'clock this morning on the Butler courts. This meet, one of the most Important and most strenuous on the Christian schedule, contained four singles matches and two doubles. Wylie, Graham, Thomas and Gloin were expected to uphold the Butler colors, but In case the program proved toooo strenuous Manfeld and Gaddis would bxr U|jj| able for a match. Next Saturday afternoon the bast team will cross bats with Ohio State on Irwin field. The Buckeyes handed Purdue a sound drubbing in the Conj ferenee opener, and since Purdue came | out ahead iu the Butler Series the locals : xvill be all the more anxious to take ! the measure of the Ohio Invaders. This game, which will bo the last Conference contest of the season for the Pagemen, Is one of the biggest on the Butler home schedule. Wagner Is New Athletic Head at Franklin College Anew athletic era, It Is thought, has dawned at Franklin College with the announcement that Griz Wagner Franklin High School basket-ball coach has been appointed basket-ball coach and athletic director of the college and Edle Duggan has been scured as football coach. Wagner, by virtue of his team winning the high school championship of Indiana for the past three years. Is one of the most widely known high school mentors in the Middle West and the securing of his services by tbe college Is expected to work wonders for Baptist athletics. Duggan, who for four years played fullback for Notre Dame, and held down a position on the Irish baseball team, Is expected to put these branches of athletics on a higher plane than they have ever before been at Franklin. On the heels of the announcement that Wagner has accepted this new position comes the word that Vandivter, Gant, Ballard and Friddle, four members of the Franklin High School team, will enter Franklin College next fall and play under the tutelage of their old mentor. Wagner, as head coach Rt Franklin, will succeed Will Nelp, who at his own request has been released to attend to his business interests in Pittsburgh. Nelp, who served but one year for the Franklin institution has accomplished results with limited material and almost singlehanded b jilt up strong athletic teams In all branches of sports.
