BUSTER BUCH CROWNED AS MARBLE KING Wins Title Over 14 Competitors in ‘Skinnin-Fats , Game in Pershing Field. JERSEY QITY, April £&—"Buster’* Buch. 14 years old. black-haired, rosrchceked, rotund and an alleged ‘‘teacher’s pet,” was crowned King of the Marble Shooters of New Jersey. He came Into the title at Pershing Field by defeating fourteen district champions in a “sklnnin-fats” game: was given a gold metal emblematic of the championship and chosen grand marshal of the Rotary Club parade April 29. More than 1,000 persons witnessed the contest. The grandfathers of two of the contestants were banished to a far corner of the field when they engaged In an argument over the ''ventpicks” rule and threatened to bruise each other. Then the game began. FIFTEEN START IN CONTEST The fifteen players toed the ring mark and plugged away. They shot so well that the judges decided to enlarge the ring. Still they shot on even terms, the work of Isadore Sllversteln, 9, receiving the plaudits of the spectators. Boys with weak thumbs began dropping out as the size of the ring increased. Larger and larger, inch by inch, it grew', but six shooters, including Isadore, stayed on. Then “Buster” made a suggestion. “I say, Mr. Judge, doesn't it occur to you that It would be a good idea to Increase the size of the ring a foot Instead of an Inch at a time?” “Gee whlzzlkers," yelled a red headed lad in the crowd, “give a listen to them wolds he’s spoutin’.” “Buster" took this offender by the nape of the neck, turned him across his knee, spanked him and then went back to the game. WINS IN FIFTEEN-FOOT KINO The ring's diameter was Increased to twelve feet, and Silverstein was disqualified for hunching. At thirteen feet John Seror and John Wilkins dropped out and at fourteen feet, Eddie Hayle, Theodore Gloncomskl and “Buster” were alone. All made their shots and the ring was made fifteen feet across. Eddie shot—and missed and Theodore followed suit. Then “Buster” raised his right knee, | used It for a rest and plugged. The small targets rolled out of the ring and a shout went up from the crowd. “Buster” brushed his dark hair back, brushed and excused himself. “I told mother I’d be home et 5 o'clock and I must hurry," ha declared and skipped away. BRITISH HOLD AIRPLANES TO WIN NEXT WAR Pilotless Machines Possible, Students of Science Assert. LONDON, April 23.—The next war—a subject which brings shudders to every Englishman—will be ona of untold horrors from the skies. This is the prediction which is freely ! made here by military atuhoTitvs Acfrsr.re urging that Great Britain must aug ment her air force and no longer depend upon her navy for protection. “Tne defense of these islands Is en trusted to the air force, and aircraft Is powerful enough, if sufficient in quantity, to defend our shores from invasion,” Captain Guest, air minister, de dared. Although he admits that it may be a “flight of imagination,” he points out that in the next war “powerful air craft will progressively expand the areas In which enemy ships cannot move with Impunity.” SPEED OF 200 MILES HOURLY. Two hundred miles an hour Is the ordinary speed of an airplane of the latest type. Captain Guest stated, and there Is no mechanical limit to the size and carrying capacity of the airplane of the future. “Possibilities of controlling unmanned surface craft or pilotless air machines from othe aircraft or from the ground -cannot be ignored,” he stated in pointing out that the greatest devastation of the next war may be from unmanned weapons of war, controlled by a single hand miles distant from the enemy. Even a more gloomy outlook upon “the next war” is taken by Sir W. JoynsonHicks, M. P., who predicted that “vast fleets of airplanes will come over our towns with bombs of 4,000 and 6,000 pounds, containing high explosives, poison gas, and probably cholera germs, and the women and children In these towns will suffer as much as the men engaged in the actual warfare.” General Seely, a military expert, declares that the prospects of future war are “becoming so complicated and terrifying to civilization that it is high tlm we should try to get the peoples of tb* world to agree to make peace.” BATTLESHIPS TO STAY HOME. Vice Admiral Percy Scott believes the battleships will stay in port In “the next War,” if there are a few alrplan9 carriers ont on the ocean. "If we have a few airplane carriers out on the ocean, with a speed of nearly double that of a battleship, the battleship will stay at home.” Admiral Scott declared. “I do not think the authorities dare deny that one man in an airplane k'lth one bomb can sink their nine-million pound battleship. “Naval strength is no longer measured by the number of battleships a countryhas, but by the number of airplane carriers and airplanes.” Great Britain is becoming nervons abont the possibilities of a death dealing war from the skies. It Is a certainty that within the next few months there will be Increased aerial activities In England. FASHIONS CAUSE CRIME. LONDON, April 27.—During one week three London magistrates declared that the present giddy fashions were responsible for the marked Increase of crime among women. DUST, COBWEBS AND GOLD. KINGSTON, England, April 27.—Miss Amy Howard, known as “The Recluse." wns found seriously til in a home filled with dust and cobwebs. In a corner was a chest containing more than SI,OOO in gold FALL OF PUBLIC IDOL. TIFLIS, April 27.—Mordkin, the Russian dancer, who was the idol of Europe when Russian ballet first became popular. is dancing with his wife here for $1.26 a month. MUSIC KEEPS HEM WARM. BRADFORD. England, April 27 Henry Thurston, an ex-soldier, walked seven miles into Bradford, pawned bis overcoat to hoar the opera, “Faust," and then walked home again. ATTENTION, LADIES, LONDON, April 27. Pereival V. Cole, famous face surgeon, declares the time Is coming when wrinkle* will be eradicated and dimple* created by plastic aurgery.
