PROGRESS MADE IN PRINTING ART Variety of Type Styles Result of Demand for Special Work. Ordinary, everyday printing work of today is so far superior to even the finest efforts along these lines only a fevc years ago that the advance in the art seems almost unbelievable is the opinion expressed by Rolapd Mellott, president of the Mellett Printing Company of thiscity. “Specimens of printing of some of the most modern and best equipped print shops are a source of never-ending surprise to many persons who have not abreast of the progress made in the printing art in the past few years,’’ Mr. Mellett said. “Take our own shop for example. With its modern, up-to-date equipment, which is of the latest type, the ordinary output of our plant is far ahead of some of the special, costly, jobs turned out by shops not so many years ago. This advance has been the result of the application of skill and training to the work combined with high quality press work. “This condition of affairs has been brought about directly by the reading public, which simply refused to be satisfied with anything short of the very finest work . btainable. The reader and user of printing became so exacting and discriminating that nothing short of the best both as to appearance and skill would satisfy him. This meant that new devices had to be produced. It meant that improved presses had to be mada, and I have noticed that where there is a necessity for a thing science will find a way jo satisfy the demand, no matter how impossible of .achievement It may have been considered before. “The reader may kfiow of the processes by which the resulis ave obtained, and may not even be interested- *0 hearing about them, but that does not in least lessen the fact that he knows whether or not the best results have been obtained. He Is interested in ends, not means. “In our own shop we have had particularly satisfactory results from the type face cast in our monotype department, ad which is to be hsd in unlimited quantities regardless of the size of the book or catalogue for which it is desired. We have a complete selection of one and twocolor initial and type ornaments and are retedv with skilled men and adequate machinery to produce extraordinary printing In the course of regular business. “One of the greatest forward steps in printing from the mercantile standpoint, has been the development of different deigns of type for various purposes. A style of type perfectly suited for one style of job may be utterly unsuited to another, and tl is is a fact that is realized more and more as time goes on. This means that a shop must be well equipped as to quantity and style of type to satisfy any demand and must have experts capable of advising the customer intelligently as to what style of type is best suited to his particular needs." HINTS FOR WISE HOME GUILDERS Satisfactory House Must Be Carefully Built, Expert Says. Stability, comfort and beauty are the three necessary factors to be considered in the construction of a home, according to R. B. Insley of K. B. Insley A Cos., 700 National City Bank building. Many persons overlook one or moro of these elements in building a home and as a result they find later that the great amount of money they have expended has been wasted or that at least they have not obtained their money s worth out of it, he said. “It takes a company of long experience, pood reputation and big standing to construct a successful home,” be explained. “I am a firm believer In sound business policy as applied to homo building, and I know from personal observa-

tion and experience that a company engaged in building homes for others must never lose sight of the desirability of building into every one of its structures a liberal measure of business reputation and good will. “The building of a home a far more serious matter than most persons realize. We may buy books, furniture, clothes, automobiles, personal eitocts of various kinds, keep them about us as long as we want, discard them when we find we no longer like them and be little the worse off, but this is not the case with a home. A dwelling In which have been invested our savings and earnings, often the savings of years, cannot be discarded with the ease of an old pair of worn out shoes. It is therefore most important that we make no serious error in planning or construction. “It is a peculiar fact that in cases of home building which mean so much to the persons interested, they so often take so little real Intelligent Interest in the work. If these same persons are in trouble they look for a lawyer of standing, ability and reputation. If there is illness in the fn.ml'v they get the best physician obtainable, but when it comes to Investing their savings in a home, these ordinarily, prudent, sensible, conservative individuals will rush offhand buy a house about which they are In absolute dark Ignorance of its construction and then be perfectly dumbfounded later on when they find they have a lot of second grade material and workmanship with which to contend. “If the home is to be satisfactory year after year, permanently, it must combine in proper proportions, tbe basic ractors of stability, beauty and comfort. And too frequently they are overlooked. “There Is no doubt In my mind but that the coming season will be one unprecedented building activity in Indianapolis. Last year was a busy one, the work never really came to stand still during the winter and still there remains a house shortage to deal with. It seems to me that persons contemplating erection of homes would do well to begin work at 02oe and not wait for tbe rusn which is sure to come. Labor is a very important item in Tbe cost of a borne and when the building rush drops upon us labor costs are sure to rlsei For this reason, and for many others 1 believe that there Is nothing to be galned'by waiting before beginning construction. ' Tills, seems to be tbe attitude of a large number of far sighted persons who already have wj k on their homes under way."

ENGRAVING ART MAKES ADVANCE Nickel-Face Halftones Said to Surpass Copper. So thoroughly established and set has become Wie engraving business that it is only occasionally that any Inventions of a radical nature affecting the art come out. However, in “Stafford-Tones,” a process by which a nikel face can be put on half-tones, officials of the Stafford Engraving Company of this city believe they have discovered a marked advance over anything yet produced In the engraving business. “I consider this the first pnbllo news of real importance in the engraving business in years." an official of the company said “it markes an improvement of the utmost importance throughout the trade. After long experience and thorough test we have perfected a process of placing a nickel face on half tones, an accomplishment the tmde has been looking for eagerly for many years. We call these new plates ‘Stafford-Tones. 1 “Stafford Tones are as superior in every way to ordinary copper halftones as the nlckeltype is to the common electrotype. One of the leading feature* of StaffordToues is that they will la: . three times as long on the press at the most conservative estimate. They are so hard and durable that they are immune to the thousand -and -one accidents which scratch, mar and ruin copper halftones, l’rintlng ink will not corrode them, this and mice cannot harm them. “In depth, richness of tone and sbad-

ing, delicacy and detail, Stafford-Tones are at least the equal of the copper half tone. And because, nickel, unlike copper, has no affinity for ink, the prints are sharper, cleaner and richer. The best part of it all is that they cost no more, although there is no comparison in their real worth. We have applied for patents on the process. “The durability of Stafford-Tor es may be tested out by taking one. Scratch it, scuff it, maltreat it, bang it around, and then compare it with copper, and Judge the results. The superiority of the new product can easily be seen.’’ DAMAGED METAL EASILY REPAIRED Economic Saving Results From New Process.

THOMAS S. MARKET. Otic of the greatest boons to motorists ,’feat has come In recent years has been ihe ieTelopraent of processes and machinery by w-hicb damaged metal parts of automoljlifs may be renewed and put Into servlet its good aa new, is the opinion expressed By .Thomas S. Markey, president of the Guarantee Metal Enameling Company of this Cilj. “Contrary to the general of motor car owners crumpled and parts are easily fixed up," Mr. said. “In fact the work can be done under modern conditions so [>erfectly that It Is Impossible to tell the difference between an old part which has undergone repairs and anew one. "Work of this character results in a great economic saving In general as well as being a real boon to the ear owner. Ordinarily, thousands upon thousands of pounds of good metal, capable of being restored to service, is sent to the Junk heap every year when it could be used us easily as not. Then there Is the big saving to the owner, for it cost* relatively little to straighten out and renew metal parts as compared with the cost of purchasing new part*. “One of the gn-ntest charges against the American people has been that they nre wuateful In an industrial sense. cently the tendency throughout the conntry has been to cure this wasteful habit and the saving of metal partn is only part of the movement along these lines. "This plant of ours is an excellent example of what can be done in this respect. It is equipped with, the most modern and complete machinery, especially designed and constructed for the purpose for which It is Intended, that of reclaiming and renewing damaged rnetaL "It always is Interesting to ns and amusing as well to note the scepticism with which our claims are met even by our customers. They will come into our place for the first time and almost apologize for even suggesting (that some battered up fender or mashed up running board ever can be put into service again. When we tell them that the job is an easy one they look at us in frank distrust and frequently do not hesitate to tell us that we cannot make good our promises. Later when they come after the parts which have been renewed and see that we have done even more than we have promised they scarcely can believe their eyes. "On of the most valuable features of our plant is the process xve use for removing enamel from metal quickly and without damage to the metal. Formerly this was regarded as an impossibility and was only accomplished by slow and tedious work so costly as to make it not worth while attempting. The process enables us to give thlrty-slx-hour service on metal enamel work, and has saved many dollars and countless hours of time to motorists.” IRVIN MAT CH, 15, J iSIN'G.
