DEATH LURKS ON STREETS OF UNHAPPY CITY Belfast Rampant With Mur* der Mania and Religious Intolerance. UNDER MILITARY PATROL NOTE—The following, written in before Michael Collins, replug ‘~cnting the Irish Free State, and ™,lme9 Craig, representing Ulster, met with British officials in London and arranged a settlement of the fanatical religious warfare between Catholics and Protestants In Lister. The story gives Americans, for the first time, a picture of the intensity of the conflict, which nay any time Sure out again.—The Editor. BELFAST, March 20 (by mail)—This bas been a beleaguered city. The flames of religious differences have been fanned high until Belfast, once a peaceful city, became rampant with murder mania. Hardly u day has gone by without street fighting between Catholics and Protesants. Bitterness ran high and blood flowed freely. During the week In which this is written there have been

nearly thirty deaths, horrible deaths by bomb and gunfire. During the last year there have been at least 300 deaths and thousands have been wounded In the unending religious warfare which rages in Belfast. Streets have been barricaded with high cement walls to check the work of snipers. Street cars were surrounded by heavy wire netting to ward off missiles and bombs. Military patrol the streets, yet they were unable to prevent clashes between Catholics and Protestants. Sniping is done from rooftops, windows and from behind garden walls. Homes have been bombed frequently; even little children were murdered in cold blood. Men have been shot in their own dooryards. Even a funeral Is not safe, for bloody attacks have been made upon funeral corteges. HATE PREVAILS l NTH. DEATH. The hatred behind this guerrilla warfare has been the bitterest. Ambulance physicians have been obliged to separate Catholic and Protestant rioters who have resumed their fighting, though seriously wounded, within the ambulances on the way to the hospital. The hate prevails until death. Ambulance physicians are under Instructions to segregate the rioters according to their religious faiths, to remove them to different hospitals and to use the same care In the segregation of tbp dead. The Belfast press, decrying the “murder mania,” checks the deathrolls aftec each riot end prints, in separate columns, the name;t of Catholic and Protestant dead and wounded. Back of this bloody feud between religious sects is a hate handed down

from generation to generation. The real basis of the hatred is that the decisive battles which secured Protestant succession to the throne of England were fought on Irish soil. In the north of Ireland the Protestant garrison upheld the cause of William 111, Prince of Orange, and in the decisive battle of the Boyne in 1090, King James, a Catholic, was finally routed by the Protestant army, under the leadership of William himself. James fled to France and William ascended the throne of England. From this battle there arose a hatred between the Protestants and the Catholics which has been handed down from centur to century—a hatred which qow centers in Belfast, a beleaguered city. TIME IS NO HEALING BALM. Time, which has softened religicus acerbities in other countries, has not applied its healing balm in Ireland. The

bitterest animosities of Catholic and Protestant, banded down from the long past years, live on. In northern Ireland it is no uncommon thing to see huge placards on the walls bearing the legend, "No Pope Here!” These aspersions are met by equally bitter placards casting reflections upon the memory of William 111, the object of the hatred of the Catholics. Perverse fate has always intervened when it seemed that the two parties to this conflict might wipe out their differences. When the war broke out which swept all Europe the fetil between north and south Ireland was renewed with all bitterness. North Ireland objected strenuously to the attitude of south Ireland. Counter charges were flung back and forth across the border. Then, to add further fuel to the flames,

the Sins Fein became active is aorth Ireland. A warfare was carried on against Great Britain. North Ireland disapproved. Eventually the war* -s spread from the south into Belfast. HAND OF MURDERER STILL UNSTATED. The hand of the murderer was unstayed. Protestants charged the murders against Sinn Fein. The religious hatred burst aflame. Catholics were driven from the shipyards, despite the fact that not all Catholics were sympathizers with the Sinn Fein. Protestants attacked Catholic premises: licensed public houses, which are largely owned by Catholics, were burned to the ground. The claims bill for this warfare while the Sinn Fein was fighting the forces of England already amounts to more than $5,000,000.

Finally came tha Irish treaty between Great Britain and south Ireland. The Ulsterites interpreted this treaty as a surrender by British statesmen, and they opposed lit. The centuries-old hatred was again accentuated. The better class of people among both the Catholics and the Protestants long for peace and use all of their efforts (o quench the hatred. The responsibility for the feuds cannot be definitely fixed. Belfast, the beleaguered city, longs for peace, but religious hatred born centuries ago has prevented.
