LOWERS GUN 1 OR TRACTOR Big Warship Effects Landing of Armament Easily. GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba, Arrll 14. Anchored In Guantanamo Bay, opposite the naval station, the U. S. S. battleship Florida successfully lowered from her decks and landed on the beach a 103milliiuetre gun on a massive mount and tractors. The big field piece, completely set up and In readiness for action when it reached land, was swung over the side to a platform built on two large motor boats making a pontoon that would, with its own power, carry the gun to shore. This was followed by the landing of two seventy-five pieces an dtractor tracks for ammunition and the train of a landing party. The action was done with great dispatch and without a hitch and all equipment landed without an accident. These guns and tractors are a part of the equipment of the advance base of the Marine Corps. The guns are now at the marines’ post of the Guantanoma station, where they are manned by a detachment which has recently arrived from Quantlco, Va. The men arc to be drilled with the gun and especially with a view to Us use for lauding parties, as was demonstrated in the handling by the Florida. This special practice of the marine is being directed by Lieut. Col. Richard M. Cutts, U. S. M. C., and will be a part of the training schedule of the Atlantic fleet, whi -h is here with its commander-in-chief, Admiral Hilary P. Jones, U. S. N., on the flagship Columbia. First bands are inclined to dye aheed only as they see the color line lowered. Dress manufacturers are active while a good business is reported by the petticoat and underwear trade. There Is also a good business in cloaks and suits. Retailers are reported as doing the best business they have had this year on all varieites of silk merchandise. First hands are operating on limited lines on commitments. They are watching the market closely and are making a strong effort to have Japan seo the roa' need to stabilize the raw silk market. This need is declared to be em phatlc, as it is said many makers are not receiving cost. Textile World will say this week: "The main development in the silk market was the decision of several manufacturers to further production. Stocks in first hands continue heavy, and buyers see no incentive for future buying. It was reported that large stocks were being liquidated at sacrifice prices. As a result of narrow buying in the finished goods ma-kets the raw material market is quiet.
