Spoms YANKS PICKED FIRST IN RACE (Continued from Page 8.) Browns to show with the Cleveland Indians crowding them all the way The Y'ankees are made an even-money proposition, and we see no good reason for denying this choice. The champions will play the first five or six weeks of the campaign minus Ruth and Meusel, and, iu all probability, will not- get away running. Yet, with their wealth of pitching and a sound infield defense, it is difficult to conceive of them being more than a few games off the pace when their two siege guns are returned to good standing. From that point, the Y'anks should go on to win rather comfortably, although the Senators, a much improved ball dub, and the Browns, with a wealth of hitting, figure to hang around like the shadow of the landlord. The rather obscure position selected for the Cleveland Indians may give rise to mild surprise, but we cannot figure them otherwise. Speaker traded away no slight percentage of the team's Impressive punch in sending Smith and Burn# to Boston, and it might be well to remember that it was hitting alone that kept the Indians in the chase last year. At that time the Cleveland pitching was notoriously bad, with the exception of '.nose performances turned ln by Coveleskie and possibly Sothern. There is no reason to suspect that it will be Improved now, for the staff remains essentially the same. In addition, the ball dub lifts grown old on Speaker’s hands. TSe Washington Senators are favored for second place because the addition of Roger Pecklnpaugh has given them one of the best infields in the league, and for the further fact that Walter Johnson 6eems to be set for a big season. The Browns have a fine offensive ball club, but the defense does not stand up as it should. It is weak at second base, where no ball club should be weak, and aside from Shocker's activities, the pitching is not likely to be consistent. Third plane should be its final resting place. Topping the second division we have the Detroit Tigers, with more or less uncertain pitching and a kid shortstop. If either or both come through, the Tigers are likely to step right over someone's head info the first division, for they remain as one of the slugging teams of baseball and they do not lack for speed. The Red Sox are given preference over the Chicago White Sox largely on the score of hitting. Yet the Boston team is singularly devoid of the promise of pitching and the team Is so slow that It will have to drive out many base hits to win ball games. The White Sox are coming fast, and should Faber and Kerr have good seasons, they might top the rival Sox at the end. Kerr is still a holdout, however, and for that reason it Is difficult to dope the White Sox situation at present. The Athletics seem destined for another sojourn below. Mack ruined what little infield defense he had by trading Joe Dugan, and made matters worse by get;lng nothing in return save a slugging outfielder.
