Fashion Magazines in South American Sticks Cause Social Crises
NEW YORK, March 29.—According to Walter Harvey, an explorer of Westwood, N. J., who returned from the South American wilds on board the Booth liner, Hubert, the women of the Brazilian mountain regions have been introduced to Amerecaa fashions and are now no longer trilling to go around in a state of natural •Impliclty. V It all happened, said Mr. Harvey, when the engineer of the big government dam that is being tuilt near Ceara, Brazil, by an American company, arrived one .day with a lot of magazines, including the latest fashion Journals. Some of these fashion magazines with tbeir attractive pictures fell into the hands of the wives of some of the native laborers and immediately they lost •11 interest in wearing just beads and •miles and wanted New York and Parisian finery. The women finally went on a hunger strike, which was followed by a cooking strike and conditions became so
