DENVER, Colo., March 2S.—Oil to supply the world’s demands for thousands of years, has been made available by * machine designed to extract oil from ► hale, Inventors declared todav Engineers who witnessed a demonstration in the shale oil fields fifteen miles from Debeque, Colo., who were In Denver today, declared the machine appeared to be a success. Dr. Victor Alderson, president of the Colorsdo School of Mines said the Invention would revo'uionlze tne oil industry. According to those who witnessed the demonstration, the machine a series of revolving retorts which extract the oil at the rate of 100 to ZOO barrels a day and also fractions the oil into gasoline and other products of commercial value. The oils are drawn out in the form of gas by a vacuum system and are carried from tank to tank and condensed back into oils which settle In various tanks. The machine Is fed at one end and emptied at the other automatically. Huge revolving fans carry the shale through. The shale comes out In dutt with oils and gases removed, leaving only hydro-carbons. Harry L. Brown, New York, is the inventor of the machine. For two years he worked secretly in conjunction with a group of engineers, chemists and financial men in the mountains near Debequk. Not until the machine was in operation and a huge tract of shale oil land, acquired by the financiers, was the invention made known to the world. It Is owned exclusively by the inventor and his associates. Thomas Dwyer, Philadelphia chemist, is in charge of the analytical work. So far he claimed he developed forty-four products from the shale. Among them are aspirin and dystuffs.

SENATOR URGES ATTENDANCE AT GENOA MEETING Effort Renewed by France to Interest Nation in Conference. WASHINGTON, March 28.—Efforts to obtain American participation -in the forthcoming Genoa economic conference were renewed in the Senate Monday by Senator France of Maryland. Mr. France Introduced a resolution proposing the President be authorized to name a representative of the World War Debt Commission to take part in the conference. The ratification of the Four-Power Pacific Treaty by the Senate. Senator France said, makes American participation in the Genoa conference desirous from the point of view of international amity. In the opinion of the Senator from Maryland who was one of Republicans opposed to the four-power treaty, the United States should indicate its good faith toward countries not signatory to the pact and participating in the conference by also attending the conference. There Is danger, he said, that failure of this country to send a representative to Genoa will be the source of some apprehension on the part of Russia particularly. The recognition of the present Russian government had been advocated by Mr. France for some time. Premier Lloyd George hag served to allay Russian fears as to the purpose of the four-power treaty, as far as Great Bi'taln Is concerned, according to Mr. France, by planning to participate in the Genoa conference. The contention of Mr. France in opposing the four-power treaty has been tha it is an ‘‘alliance" whose consummation would result In the formation of a counter alliance or alliances. The resolution which was referred to the Senite Foreign Relations Committee, provides $20,000 for proper representation for taking part in the conference. —Copyright, 1922, by Public Ledger Company.
GARRISONS NOT TO BE REDUCED Posts in Hawaii and Panama Not to Be Affected by Army Reductions. WASHINGTON, March 2S—Reduction of Army appropriations and personnel as provided in the bill recently passed the House, will not result in curtailment of the garrisons in Hawaii and Panama, Secretary Weeks has announced definitely. The War Department. Mr. Weeks asserts, would regard the action of the House In eliminating from the bill the committee clauses which would have attempted to fix, by legislative enactment of the garrisons at fire thousand each, as direct evidence the House had recognized the right of the President and the War Department to determine and control the apportionment of troops. It was indicated statements made prior to the passage of the bill by Representative Anthony, chairman of the sub-committee on Army appropriations, intimating the War Department would reduce the garrisons to figures proposed by the committee were entirely •unauthorized. Maintenance of an effective garrison at Panama is regarded as so important by the War Department that efforts shortly will be made to establish routes for the operation of big Army airplanes between the United States and Panama with a view to more efficient air defense of the Canal Zone. The action of the House in eliminating the provisions which sought to instruct the President and the War Department on the disposal of troops, apparently brings to a close an Incident which might have been developed Into a clash of authority between the legislative and executive brunches of the Government.—Copyright, 1922, by Public Ledger Company.
