NAVY RADIO FOR SPREADING NEWS President Harding’s Help Sought by Press Confab. WASHINGTON, March 27.—The importance vo American newspapers and press associations of the continued use of Navy radio facilities for the transmission of news to and from Alaska, Hawaii, the Philippines and the Orient has been called to tho attention of President Harding hy Walter Williams, president of the Press Conference of the World, and J. W Brown, secretary of the conference. Mr. Williams, who is dean of the school of journalism of the University of Missouri, and Mr. Brown, who is editor and publisher, sought the President's aid in pending legislation, which would extend for five years the present Government grant for the use of the Navy radio for news dissemination. The existing permission, which has be£n operative for two years, expires in June, and efforts are being made in Congvess to limit the extension to one year or deny further uss of the facilities altogether. The President, it t* understood, *- pressed a sympathetic view toward the proposed five-year extension, quickly appreciating the arguments of the newspapers, that a year extension, or even another two-year extension would not permit the development of new fields of news exchanges, which the newspapers and press associations are eager to bring about in the* Orient and particularly in Australia and New Zealand.—Copyright, 1022, by Public ledger Company. TOLEDO MAN IN HARDING’S FAVOR W. F. Brown May Become Undersecretary of State. WASHINGTON, March 27.—Walter Folger Brown of Toledo is understood to be President Harding's choice for the Undersecretary of State, about to be vacated by Henry P. Fletcher of Pennsylvania. Mr. Brown, who has been attached to the Administration for the UuM six months as the President's personal representative on the Government reorganization plan, has long been sUt*4 for higher honors. The Ohio lawyer was offered the ambassadorship to Tokio last year, but told the President he preferred service in America. Mr. Brown is a lawyer who was active iu the Progressive movement in 1912. He was an ardent Harding man in the 1920 campaign and the President always has been anxious to have him In Washington in a major capacity. It had been thought some man recruited from our professional diplomatic service would be chosen to succeed Mr. Fletcher. Among those who have been prominently mentioned are John W. Garrett of Maryland and J. Butler Wright, counselor of the American embassy at London. v It is understood Leland Harrison of tlie State Department is slated to succeed Fred Morris Hearing as Assistant Secretary of State in the departmental reorganization.
