Highways and By-Ways of LiF OF New York (Copyright, 1932, by th* Public Ledger Company.)
NEW YORK, March 17.—With three of his so-called “bedroom farces” playing to capacity at New York theaters — •'Ladies' Night” and “Getting Gertie’s Garter,” in Brooklyn, and “The Demlvlrgln” in the Broadway district —A1 H. Woods, theatrical manager, has become tha storm center of the uprising against the presentment of filth on the stage. Not only have the clergy named Woods as the prime offender against decency, Rabbi -Wise calling upon him to withdraw "The Demi-virgin” in the interest of decency and for the good reputation of the Jewish race, but William A. Brady, a fellow theatrical manager, in a public speech, also named Woods as a man who was riding the theater into damnation, adding: “Any man who deliberately produces a play of the vile, dirty, filthy kind should go to prison, whether it be A! Woods or any other producer.” Who is A1 n. Woods? The answer Is here in New York, the story of a poor boy who came out of the great east side To meet Woods and talk with his Is to fall under the spell of his engaging personality. He is a good friend, and, quoting Abe Bernstein, secretary of the Grand Street Boys’ Association, "his hand is always in his pocket to help the less fortunate.” And, further, he has not always been a producer of filth -but we are getting ahead of our tale. AJ H. Wools began his theatrical career some thirty years ago as an usher in Harry Miner's Londou Theater on ihe Bowery, then the home of farce and burlesque. It l not illogical for a theatrical manager to start as an Years ago the Shuberts were ushers at a theater in Syracuse, and more recently we have Earl Carroll, who served a similar theatrical apprenticeship in a Pittsburgh theater. But the environment of the Bowery 1° the days when Ai IT. Woods blossomed out there as an usher was in poiite phraseology “No placu for a minister s son.” 1: was the worst environment the metropolis had to offer and enjvjed a reputation for the lawlessness usually attendant upon gambling dens, opium dives, painted ladies and al! the re-ff that goes to make up a thoroughly vlc- : >us neighborhood. Killings were frequent nud gangsters walked unafraid in the broad daylight.
The first effort ‘of Woods to essay the j role of theatrical management was his opening of the old National Theater In the Bowery, wh'ch he rechristened “The Niokleodian.” His bankroll was composite of the good will of friends. His -h.-w brought audiences and Colonel Timothy 'Dry Dollar) Sullivan and the rest cf tie Clan Sullivan took notice of

Al, who occasionally got .to the rat tracks and widened the circle of his ae quaintances. We next find Al H. Woods in thThalia Theater, also on the Bowery, up lifting the drama with blood-curdliiu thrillers. And they were thrillers. Al H. Woods by this time was installed up town in the Broadway theatrical dis trict, and he broke bread in the sanii restaurants that were patronized bj Charles Frohinan, David Belaseo and A L. Erlanger. It was not long befor. they, too, were calling him “Al”—thi.pushing, determined youngster from thBowery. Ever and anon breaking through thi Al H. Woods whose name is associated with the salacious is a distinctly differ ent sort of an Al H. Woods. This other .type of a theater manager has even had great dollar success with the decent drama, and that Is why his worthwhile friends cannot understand his habitual reversion to the London theater of the Bowery sort of entertainment. The nice Al Woods actually made mil lions out of his Potash and Perlmutter shows. There were four editions of the Montague Glass reflection of business life on tho lower and upper east side, and while the latter editions did not have the box office of the initial editions, still they did make money. Then he literally “cleaned up” with “Within the Law” a play with a moral. And that is why when we look at th. ragged underside of the tapestry of Al H. Woods we must not forget It has an upperside In which are some really worthy patterns. But Mr. Woods cannot escape by saying, “the public is to blame, for it did not come to all of my clean shows.” An unprejudiced view is that Mr. Wood* la In desperate need of ethics—something not taught on the B'-wcry when he was getting his start in life.
