ULAUSSEN HELD NOT GUILTY OF PRO-GERMANISM Accused Advertising Man, Leaving Shipping Board, Is Vindicated. WASHINGTON, March 14—Evidence to refute recent charges M. B. Claussen, advertising manager of the Shipping Board, had been engaged In pro-German activities during and since tho war, was made public in connect'on with the announcement of Mr. Claussen’s retirement from his present position. Mr. Claussen, it was announced by W. J. Love, vice president of the Emergency Fleet Corporation, will be succeeded as advertising manager by James W. Boring of Chicago, formerly of Montgomery Ward A Cos. The evidence of Mr. CLar.ssen’s loyalty was exhibited In the form of letters written by Melville E. Stone, general managei of the Associated Press and Admiral A. F. Long, chief of the Navy Intelligence Service, asserting Mr. Claussen, through his former connection with the Hamburg American Steamship Company, rendered the American Government valuable service during the war. From Feb. 10, 1918, until the Armistice, Admiral Long said, Claussen was employed as a special agent of the Government, served satisfactorily in that capacity and was able "to furnish information which proved to be a value to the Government.” The reason for Mr. Ciaussen’s retirement as advertising manager. Shipping Board officials said, was due to illness. He will not leave the board's employ, but will be sent on tour of thai Pacific Coast and the Orient with a view to reporting upon port conditions with regard to the development of the various trans-Paciflc passenger service of the Emergency Fleet Corporation.—Copyright, 1922, by Public Ledger Company.
