POPE PIUS XI TO STAND FIRM FOR HOLY SEE Little Hope of Agreement Between Vatican and Italian State. ROME, March 10.—It Is unlikely that any move will be made by Pope Pius XI toward reconciliation between the Vatican and the Italian State, according to th* first official announcement on the subject made today. As the result of conflicting reports Cardinal Gasparrl, Papal Secretary of State, made an exclusive statement, explaining the attitude of the new Supreme Pontiff. "The personal sentiments of O ope Plus XI toward Italy are known anC appreciated,” said the prelate. "lie comes ot a patriotic family and proved his love of his country during the war, and on his mission to Poland, when he was constantly In touch with Italian officers. Again he proved it as Archbishop of Milan. Twice he publicly blessed crowds and Italian soldiers. "But, as Pontiff he holds in sacred deposit. the rights of the Church of Rome which be swore to defend upon his accession to the throne. He cannot renounce them. "Reconciliation is based upon renun. elation of the rights of the Iloly See. This Is impossible. Therefore there is a dead, lock.” Dunn Says Captain Kidd’s Coin Is Safe Back from the West Indies where he did a vast amount of research work, J. P. Dunn, former city controller and local historian, reports he does not believe it worth while to Investigate further al*?ged locations of Captain Kidd’s treasure cache. Some investigators have been led to believe Captain Kidd’s voyage to hide the gold led him to a point on the New Jersey coast, Mr. Dunn said. GHOS'FfAILS TO COME WHEN STAGE IS SET All Night Vigil at Haunted House Brings No Reward. HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, March 10.—All Altogonish County was discussing today the failure of the ghost to appear In the famous “haunted" house at Caledonia Mills last night when the stage was ali set for him. Whether the ghost had cold feet or not, the fact remains that although Dr. Franklin Prince, the American scientist and his party, and Alexander McDonald, owner of the property, and his daughter, Mary Ellen, were in the house waiting eagerly for a ‘‘manifestation,” there was not the slightest disturbance. Dr. Prince and his party were bitterly disappointed ns they bad counted eagerly upon the grisly apparition showing his hand. Absolutely certain that there would be developments, Dr. Prince had made careful preparations and the house was watched by guards. Every one in the heqj.se was wide awake and they kept an all-night vigil, but their patience was unrewarded. It was a bright moonlight night and residents of the county think that this mny have discouraged the spook. Others openly stated today that the only spirits in the house are moonshine spirits. Dr. Prince is determined to give the uneasy spirit another chance tonight. If nothing develops again, then tonight probably will see the end of his investi-

CHICAGO PLANS FIGHT AGAINST WAVE OF CRIME City’s SIO,OOO Law Enforcement Officer Will Head Lawless Drive. CHICAGO, March 10.—An "aroused citizenship” against crime was fomented by city officials here today. Mass meetings and conferences of high officials, clergy, business men and other citizens to speed up action against law violators were planned throughout tho city. The movement was Inaugurated by the Rev. John H. Williamson, city law enforcement officer, hired by Mayor William Hale Thompson at a s ilary of SIO,OOO yearly to rid Chicago of crime. State's Attorney Robert Crowe announced a mass meeting would be held Tuesday at the Wood's Theater to discuss curbing of Chicago crime. "The general public must be aroused,” Crowe said. "Some united public action will have to be taken to curb the crime wave.” Crowe has called a special grand Jury meeting which he said would probe recent "miscarriages of Justice” In which several labor leaders were acquitted by Jury trials, or obtained a "hung” Jury. The Chicago crime commission also has called conferences the first to be held Saturday night. A frank discussion of how criminals who escape punishment are breeding disrespect for the law, will be held, the commission announced.
