24,702 BUILDING PROSPECTS FOR 1922 IN INDIANA Schools, Country Over, Bring Largest Construction Problem. The Architectural Forum, a trade paper of the profession designing buildings in this country, in a comprehenslre ■urvey Just concluded, shows that the clay products industry leads in building materials and also shows that $1,190,000,000 worth of building is contemplated for 1822 in this country. A copy of this 6urvey has been received by the officers of the Marion County Building Trades Council. The method of this survey was to obtain from a very large Dumber of typical architectural offices In every section of the country, a report covering the classification and valuation of all buildings in each office for which plans have been drawn and construction is pending or on which plans are being drawn out for construction as building costs become more stabilized. Reports were received from 055 architectural offices, with the results classified by States and by character of building. The report further 6hows that in this country as a whole and in most sections of this country, school buildings constitute the biggest single item of the contemplated construction. In all districts industrial buildings constitute a relatively small port'on of the proposed building, while nearly everywhere apartment bouses and office buildings are rather prominent. Os the ninety-six architectural offices in Indiana, thirty-eight made reports. These show that Indiana architects have on their boards the following construction projects". Dwellings, 2.015; apartment houses. 2,501; hotels. 3.200; schools, pi hllc buildings, 3,005; office buildings. l-iV"* 1 ; Industrial buildings. 1.260, and 420 p garages, making a total of 24.702 bni.l4 ing prospects in Indiana this year. Tim estimated value of this prospective const i lotion is not given in the report, but rn ncludes with the statement that the d*9 tand for building is great the country over, with the cost somewhat nearly HI Per cent higher than in 1013.

Scoby of San Antonio, Texas, to be director of the mint. He will succeed Raymond T. Baker of Nevada, who leaves office March 17 after five years' service, the post being of that tenure. Mr. Scoby is a Buckeye. His intimacy with the President dates from the time of Mr. Harding’s entry into public life twenty-two years ago as a State Senator of Ohio, when Mr. Scoby was clerk of the Senate. Senator James E. Watson of Indiana m drawing for seats in the Senate won the famous place held for so many years by the late Boies Penrose —seat number 7, being tbs third from the center aisle on the front row to the left of the President’s rostrum. The chair Is a particularly big one, built specially for Mr. Penrose, and is conspicuous for a large cushioai with which it is upholstered. Secretary Hughes, browned by Bermuda’s sun, sends word to the State Department that he will be at his d:sk on Monday, promptly to start in on the second year of his conduct of Americt’s foreign affairs. Henry P. Fletcher of Pennsylvania, who has been Acting Secretary of State during the past three weeks, expects to leave for his new post, the ambassadorship to Belgium within a month. The name of his successor as Under Secretary of State remains a mystery. Two men are thought to be most prominent in the running—John W. Garrett of Maryland, who was Secretary General ol the armament conference, and J. Butler Wright, counselor of the American embassy at London, and who was on special service in Washington during tte conference. Warren Delano Robbins, native of New Tork and resident of Massachusetts has been appointed counselor of the America nembassy at Berlin. He probably trill accompany Representative Houghton of New York to Germany, when Mr. Houghton proceeds to the ambassadorship there. Mr. Robbins relinquishes the chlefshlp of the division of Near Eastern affairs at the State Department. He is a “career” man having been in our diplomatic service since his graduation from Harvard in the class of 1908. His wife, who is a native Argentinian. The production is the work of the Washington Opera Company of the National Opera Association, a gallant and perservlng band of music-lovers who are working to establish a truly national school of grand opera.
