PAPER INDUSTRY GAINS STRENGTH Normal Conditions Predicted by Head of Local Company. There has been a marked Improvement In the paper business since last fall, according to Fred S. Coffman, manager and president of the American Paper Stock Company, and indications are that conditions will continue to grow bettor ns time goes on. “It is doubtful if any business teas harder hit by the business slump and financial depression than was the 'paper Industry,” Mr. Coffman said. “I believe the reason the industry ns a whole suffered so severely was due to the fact the biggest users of paper were industries which themselves were operating only on a half-time during the depression. “We are In a good position to understand general conditions as our -ompany sorts and grades about fifteen different Qualities of paper ,out of mixed paper from other industries and then we send It to paper mills in this State, Ohio and Michigan for manufacture into box board. This of course keeps us in Intimate touch with the paper liilustry over a wide stretch of territory, and enables us to keep a touch with actual conditions. “Beginning last fall there became apparent a decided improvement in general conditions in the paper trade. This Improvement took the form of increased demand and right now mills, while not running up to full time, are running at a capacity indicating a surprisingly healthy condition in the trado. From fll Indications the improvement is not spasmodic or temporary, but is permanent in character. Our company is now doing within 35 per of our normal bulk of business. “Our observations have led us to believe that from now on there will l>o still further improvement in the industry and wo may safely say a return to normal conditions is practically within sight.” SULPHURBATHS EFFECTIVE CURE Modern Science Puts Treatment in Reach of All. Why travel hundreds or thousands of miles to bathe in mineral springs when the same, if not better, results may be obtained right here In Indianapolis? Is the question asked by G. P. Cruzan, manager of the Sulphur-Vapor Baths and Massage. 132V4 West Washington street, and having propounded the Interrogatory he Immediately proceeded to answer it. "There is no use In the world of going away,” Mr. Cruzan said. “With the Dr. Kruse system of giving sulphur baths, a system which I believe the most scientific In the world for the treatment of rheumatism and kindred ailments, available at home, there Is not the slightest ns© of a person going to great expense, trouble and inconvenience to make triple cf distant place© for t-eatment. “Wa all know that physical fitness is a requisite to happiness, a truth that was recognized by the ancients as completely as It is today. The ancients also were quick to recognize the curative powers of the sulphur bath, and even primitive and uncivilized people* have known it. “Os course In early times It was necessary to take the patient to the sulphur bath as It was Impossible to bring the patient, and strange as it may seem that idea has come down through the ages and still prevails In the minds of many persons. Now as a matter of fact there Is no more reason why the

sulphur bath cannot be brought to the patient just as coal Is brought to the home. “One of the most recent and remarkable curative agents for disease is the Dr. Kruse system of sulphur vapor baths, which combines the medicinal properties of the factious sulphur and mineral springs with , other curative minerals which make the baths capable of effecting remarkable results. “Entirely apart from the extraordinary medicinal and curative powers of the bath the following features may be mentioned, which make them attractive to persons in need of treatment, individual attention is given to every case; no extreme temperatures are experienced by the patient iu this treatment; the danger of taking cold is eliminated absolutely, as the lungs are not heated and the pores are all closed, the root of the disease is attacked by driving off poisonCus acids which accumulate in the body; the treatment complies in every detail with the laws of nature; and physicians directions are complied with carefully anti too the letter. “Good health is a priceless possession and all who have It should do their utmost to retain it, while those who have lost it owe it to themselves to do everything In their power to regain it.” JUNK AUTO PARTS EASILY RENEWED Damaged Metal Easily Restored to Original Condition. Few motorists realize the ease with which metal parts of their machines, which they supposed had been damaged beyond any hope of repair may be renewed and put back in service, ncco>ding to Thomas S. Mnrkey, president of the Guarantee Metal Enameling Company. “Asa matter of fact we can make an old fender as good as new, do matter how badly smashed up it has been,” Mr. Markey said. “Thousands of dollars worth of perfectly serviceable metal automobile parts are Junked every year by owners who fail to realize just what can be don© toward renewing damaged metal by concern* such as Curs. This makes a tremendous Industrial waste and one that could easily be avoided. Time after time autoists have come into our plum with crumpled and battered fenders and parts and expressed the utmost distrust of our ability to do anything with them. Then, when they came back a day or so later, they have been dumfounded at the results obtained by us, and many times we have heard the opinion expressed that we had substituted new fender* for the damaged articles originally brought to us. "Os course to this kind of work as it should be done and to properly reclaim and Knew these battered metal parts the plnnts doing the work must be equipped with modern machinery, ©*- pecially designed and built for till* particular purpose. Our plant l* the last word In this line and wo are prepared to do the very best and most effective Jobs. "The old adage that ‘necessity is the mother of invention’ has been proved once more in tilts field In an interesting manner. For years there was a big demand for the perfection of a machine or a process that would remove baked enamel from automobile parts quickly and effectively and st the same time not cause any Injury to the tneul-Itself. For rears It was regarded ns linpoS“tble of accomplishment. But only recently a process was evolved and we are using it dozens of time daily with the utmost success, by which it is possible to give thirty-sit hour service on nil kind* of sheet metal enamel work. It is unnecessary to say that this has resulted In . great benefit to our customer*.”

ANCIENTS KNEW VALUE OF MARBLE Architectural Gems of Old World Lasting. Quarrying and working of marble are among the earliest of building and decorative creations. Marble was known and used for building purposes more than 1,000 years before the Christians era and, according to F. E. Gates of the Gates Varbie and Tile Company, no really satisfactory substitute ever has been found for It and It is just as supreme today in the highest forms of decorative construction as It was the day the final touches were pui. on tho famous Parthenon at Athena "Marble was the medium for-the greatest height of artistic expression, whether for sculpture of architecture, in ancient Greece,’ Mr. Gates said. "Tho buildings that yet remain at Athens, although in ruins, the Parthenon, Eretheium, Propylaea, Theseiurn and Olympieium, as well as the marvelously beautiful ruins at Antioch, Ephesus, Miletus Epldaurus and dozens of other places dear to tho hearts of tho anliquarians, are all instances of the highest expression of the most artistic feeling executed in the noblest of materials-marble. "It is no exaggeration to state that but for the lasting nature of the medinin employed the most magnificent conceptions, both in architecture aud sculpture, would have been lost to the world. It la to Incised marble slabs that we are Indebted for most of early record., many of which would have been lost had they been cut on other and less durable materiaL "Marble and tile are no longer luxuries, they are necessities. Their first cost Is practically theLr only cost, and the realization of this throughout the building trade and by far sighted builders is one reason why the shops of the yards of the F. E. Gates Marble and Tile Com pauy cover an area of 56,000 square feet of ground, devoted solely to the fabrication of marble. “In our own business we have found that the demand for marble has continued strong, despite adverse industrial condltlona throughout the Industrial world. During the last year wa have completed Jobs of considerable size for banks, theaters, public and private buildings from points in Indiana to New Orleans, La , and at present we are busy fabricating marble for a wide variety of work which is now under construction. “It looks very much to me as if the country were in for a building boom of sir years or more duration. In order to compensate for the failure to build during the war daya It is going to be necessary for a great amount of building to be done in the next few years.” BIG DEMAND FOR FINE PRINTING Specimens of printing of the some of the most modern and best equipped print shops are the source of great surprise to many persons who hare not kept abreast of the rapid advancing strides made In the printing art in the past years is the opinion expressed by Roland Mellett, president of tho MoJlett Printing Company. "The ordinary, every day outpnt of our shop, which is one of the most modern and up-to-date in tho country," Mr. Mollett said, “is today as good In everv respect, or even better than the very finest, most costly, special Jobs turned out by printing plants only a few years

ago. This advance has come about by tho application of skill to the work and tho very highest quality of press work obtainable. “This condition simply had to come about. The reader and user of printing has bocome more exacting, more discriminating and more particular than ever before and he demands the very best both as to appearance and skill. He may not know the processes by which these results are obtained, but be certainly knows whether or not they have been obtained, and everything that does not come up to the high standard set by him is almost sure of rejection. “In our own shop we have had particularly fine results from the type face cast in our monotype department, and which may be had in unlimited quantities, regardless of the size of the catalogue or booklet. We bare a complete selection of one and two color initials and type ornaments, and are ready with skilled men and adequate machinery to produce extraordinary printing as the ordinary output. “Development of different designs of type for different purposes has been one of the greatest forward steps from the mercantile standpoint, taken In modern printing. It is well known that frequently the style of type, the manner in which tho reading matter Is set up, and the appeal It carries to the eye Is fully as important as the context in causing the reader to cither read or cast the article aside. "The day is long gone when a shop with a limited supply of type styles can • xpect to meet with any degree of success in the mercantile field. The demand today Is for a wide variety of styles to meet different conditions and different purposes, and I think that I can safely say that our plant is equipped to meet the very widest rang* of demands which can be put upon 1L”
