SIX-HOUR-DAY RECEPTION OF MOST CONCERN Attitude of Operators in New Demand Next Mine Problem. In the face of widespread cessation of coal mining operation* In the United States April 1, threatened through probable Inability of operators and miners to effect anew agreement by that date, Interest today centered In the reception the miners’ demands for a six-hour day and a five-day week along with continuance of their present wage scale will get from the operators. Already there are Indications that the operators regard the six-hour day demand as “Impossible.” Scarcely less Interesting Is the outcome of the demand of the IlUnofs coal workers, meeting in a convention of their own Sunday, that International officers of the United Mine Workers reinstate Alex Howat and his Kansas “outlaw” miners. John L. Lewis and other international officials term the results of the union convention which ended Saturday evening a “great victory” for the administratoin. So narrow was the margin in the test of strength between the “regular” and "rebel" factions in the convention, however, that Howat and Frank Farringotn, head of the Illinois miners and ally of the Kansan, regards the result as a moral

Tlctory for the anti-administration camp. They point out that the Kansas situation was brought forcibly to the front and declared the refusal of the convention to grant the Kansana a hearing will be thrown in the face of organized labor for the next quarter of a century. They asserted, too, that the international officials lost ground when the convention rejected the eight-hour day program in favor of the six-hour day. That the Illinois and Kansas miners, however, do not intend to set up a dual labor organization was made plain when the Illinois delegates rejected a proposal In their meeting that they cease paying dues to the International union. Farrington stated it was only the desire of the Illinois workers to bring about harmony between the Kansas faction and the Lewis group. The Illinoisans pledged financial aid to Howat and his followers.
