We Will Help You to Save Safely :Jflrtr!jcr cn& Company NEW FOLLOWS WOOD METHODS OF PUBLICITY Personal Indorsements of Senator Used to Bait Followers. The striking similarity of Senator Harry S. New's campaign for renomination to the fight waged by Maj. Gen. Leonard Wood for Indiana's presidential indorsement in 1920 became noticeable today when the Senator’s Marion County organization gave out a number of interviews urging the selection of the Senator. The statements are given as a means of publicity to attract a crowd to a rally Wednesday night in the Criminal Courtroom, which Dr. E. D. Clark, chairman of the group of citizens sponsoring the Senator’s renomination, has called. Charles A. Bookwalter, Marion County manager for Senator New, will make the opening address at the meeting. Political observers recalled Genera! Wood’s publicity campaign was carried on chiefly by published interviews with his supporters. Robert Tyler, who was in charge of General Wood's publicity in Indiana, now is in charge of Marion County publicity for Senator New. The following statements were given out by the New headquarters today: NEW HEADQUARTERS ISSUES STATEMENTS. Mrs. Charles H. Jose, ISIS Orange street, vice president of the South Side Republican Club and one of the group who signed the call for the New meeting at the courthouse Wednesday night, said: “We need Senator New in Washington. He has been an outstanding figure there because of his abilities and his sound common sense, and in this existing adjustment period able and sensible men are required to do what Is best for the country. His record on legislation desired by women stands closest scrutiny, and his service to his constituents has at all times been efficient and his willingness to serve them has been emphasized by the service he has given them. “There is no reason why we should depart from long established custom to return to the United States Senate men who have faithfully represented us in that body. There are many reasons why' we should return Senator New to the Senate. I am for Senator New and I am confident the meeting of his friends on Wednesday night will be visible proof that Marlon County feels its need of him.’’ “I am unreservedly In favor of renominating Harry S. New for United States Senator on the Republican ticket at the primaries May 2,’’ Is the Indorsement of Walter E. Pittsford, manufacturer, who has not heretofore been active In politics.” I shall attend the meeting of his friends at the courthouse Wednesday night and I think It is an approval we owe Senator New for his splendid service to show him on that occasion we indorse his record as an efficient public servant.
KNOWS NOTHING AGAINST SENATOR. “If there Is valid reason why Senator New should not be returned to the United States Senate I have not heard it. lie is in complete accord with the politics upon which the Republican party went into power last November by an overwhelming vote. He has always been on the job and has proved it to his constituents by always responding to requests for service. His ability as a statesman has been recognized by his appointment to important committees o'. the Senate, and his record in problems of large importance deserves our unqualified approbation." Mrs. Woolf Sussman, prominent in Red Cross work, and in various activities, said: “Senator New was loyal to the interests of the country In every movement during the war, and has proven himself a wise and sound statesman in the reconstruction period since the war. I am going to attend the meeting Wednesday night to Indorse his candidacy because I believe it Is the duty of his friends to make open declaration at this time that they are squarely for him and will work for him without ceasing from now until his election.” Hra. Harry Miesse, 3219 North Meridian ttreet, not heretofore identified with political activities, is an ardent supporter of Senator New. SAYS SENATOR IS FRIEND OF WOMEN. “It seems important at this time,” Mrs. Miesse said, “women should take an active part In public affairs, especially ,n the selection of candidates for office. Senator New has supported all bills demanded by the women; voted for the suffrage amendment; for all prohibition measures and the maternity bill urged by women. He has been right on all war issues. His views on national affairs are well known, and his earnestness and sincerity commend him to the people. “I believe the women will gladly indorse Senator New in the campaign for his renomination, and I have Invited my friends to attend the meeting Wednesday night to organize his supporters.” Eagles Initiate 200 With elaborate ceremonies a class of two hundred candidates was initiated by Indianapolis aerie No. 211, Fraternal Order of Eagles yesterday under the sponsorship of Mayor Samuel Lewis Shank. E. E. Cole of Noblesvllle, judge of the Hamilton Circuit Court, State chaplain of the Eagles, delivered the principal address at the afternoon meeting, speaking on “Our Principles.” Addresses also were made by Andrew Smith, Otto P. Deluse and Mayor Shank. Families of the members were guests at a musical entertainment in the evening.

EXPECT CRISIS IN WAGE FIGHT AT CONFERENCE Miners and Railworkers Plan Fight Before Labor Board. PARLEY 7 OPENS MARCH 6 CHICAGO, Feb. 13.—Lines for what is expected to develop into an acute industrial crisis were being drawn today as coal miners and railway workers prepared for a conference here on Feb. 21 to plan “defensive action” against proposed wage reductions and the United States railway labor board began clearing the decks for the beginning on March 6 of hearings of applications for wage reductions by the carriers and wage increases by the workmen. The carriers have asked for a fiat reduction of 10 per cent In the wages of members of the “big tour” brotherhoods and the so-called standard unions. The union men are preparing vigorously to oppose this move and to fight for pay increases for many classes of railway workmen. HEARINGS MAY EAST SEVERAL WEEKS. The labor board will begin hearings on the wage questions on March C, but It is not expected that Immediate rulings will be handed down. The hearings themselves will require several days, or perhaps weeks, and consideration which teh board will give the evidence Introduced undoubtedly will require much additional time. While the railroad labor situation Is moving toward what many believe to be a crisis, the opinion also Is growing that a coal strike Is inevitable on April 1, When the prevailing agreement between the union and the operators expire. Wage cuts, elimination of check-off system, and other issues are viewed with such unyielding attitude by both sides, It Is declared, that only a test of strength can determine the outcome of the controversy. OBJECT TO NEW RULINGS. Fuel has been added to the railway wage controversy, by the announcement by the labor board, of new rules governing railway signal men. The outstanding feature of these new rules is that they provide no overtime shall be paid, until after ten hours of work, the usuai hourly wage prevailing for the ten-hour period. This rule is held to amount In effect to reductions approximating $300,COO annually in the aggregate pay of the signalmen. The rules are effective Feb. 16. With wage scales of both the miners and the rail workers threatened, it is considered highly probable that the conference here on Feb. 21 will be devoted almost entirely to discussion of plans for combating the wage reduction movement in both Industries and to the preparation for a vigorous campaign in opposition to wage cuts.
