BEVERIDGE NO LONGER ABLE TO RESIST DEMAND Former Senator ‘Yields’ to Call of Friends and Enters Race. BIG MEETING CALLED Albert J. Beveridge will “yield” to the demsnds of Indiana Republicans that he become a candidate for the Republican nomination for the United States Senate at 2 o’clock next Thursday afternoon. In order that the final capitulation of Mr. Beveridge will be properly received, Clarence R. Martin, who will be his campaign manager as soon as the Insistence of the voters becomes so strong that Mr. Beveridge can no longer stay out of the race, has sent the following letter to friends of the former Senator: “It is proposed that representatives from all the Beverldge-for-Senator Clubs throughout the State meet In Indianapolis on Thursday, Feb. 16, to request the Hon. Albert J. Beveridge to become a candidate for United States Senator, and receive his answer—this answer to be his formal announcement of candidacy.” ISSUES BETWEEN NEW A S D BEVERIDOE. In answer to the inslstance of his fellow citizens on that day and date, Mr. Beveridge is expected to have a carefully prepared speech setting out, at least to some extent, the platform on which he expects to stand for nomination. Considerable interest attaches to this statement as It probably will Indicate the lines the campaign between Mr. Beveridge and Senator Harry S. New will follow. Senator New is seeking nomination on the strength largely of his support of the Harding Administration. He never loses an opportunity to explain how close he Is to the President and he has repta/tedly expressed his approval of everything the President has done, tvithout exception. Whether Mr. Beveridge will take issue with Senator New on Administration affairs is one of the questions that may he answered in the speech in which he will make his (mtnouneeraent. It is probable that while Mr. Beveridge will not openly oppose the Administration, he may differ from It on many subjects. President Harding has written to at least one Indiana Republican, expressing his hope that Senator New will be nominated and elected, but stating he will take no part in the Indiana campaign. HEADQUARTERS AT CEAYPOOE. It has been definitely decided that the Beveridge headquarters will be in suite 328 Claypool Hotel, a part of the “presidential row” of 1920, when four candidates for President had their headquarters there. Senator New will speak at South Bend tonight and will then go directly to Washington. He has not decided on what date he will return, but be is expected to be back in Indiana in about two weeks. Meanwhile organization work will be carried on from his headquarters in the Hotel Severin.
